UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB S. FLEGAL, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO JOHN SIMANDL, OFSAME PLACE.
METALLIC RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 678,464, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed September 21. 1900. Serial No. 30.691. (hio model.)
To al? whom t may concern:
Be it known that I', J A0013 S. FLEGAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Railroad-Ties g and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic railway-ties; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a metallic railway-tie, of sheet steel or other metal, so constructed or corrugated that the maximum strength of the metal may be utilized and the Weight and cost ot the tie thereby reduced to a minimum, and, second, to provide a combined tie and tie-plate so constructed that the two and the rail may be secured together without spikes, screws, or bolts. These objects I attain by the novel construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a rail with my new tie and tie-plate applied to it. Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings by letters of refonally opposite` hooks-H, which hook over the lianges I of the rail J and hold it irmly in place on the plate.
In building the road the tie may be thrown in place first. Then the plate G is placed upon it in such a diagonal position that the rail may be placed down upon the plate between the hooks H Without touching them. The plate is then turned in the horizontal plane to the position shown, so that its hooks H get a firm hold on the flanges of the rail. The tie is then squeezed together Withka suitable tool (not shown) until the hooks F of the plate are let down over the notched portionl of the edgesof'the tie, upon which they then get a good hold, when the tie is released and resumes its normal width.
From the above description it will be seen that I form an inexpensive metallic tie and secure the same to a rail without spikes, screws, or bolts.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a railroad-tie formed of sheet metal and having longitudinal corrugations and horizonal, notched side flanges formed of the edges of the sheet at a level With the top of th'e tie, of a rail-chair having down and inwardly curved hooks adapted to grasp over the notched edges of the ilanges when the tie is sprung together and then released between said hooks; said rail-chair having at its upper side two diagonally-disposed hooks, adapted to engage and hold the ilanges of the rail to the chair as long as the chair is in its normal position on the tie, and to release the rail-flanges when the chair is turned in the horizontal plane away from its normal position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
