SPEED GOVERNGR.
(Application lnd Sept 11, IBOOJJ (ln Model.)

NITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE'.
JAMES C. MURPHY, OF CANTON, WISCONSIN.
SPEED-GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 678,418, dated July 16, 1901. Application iiled September 11, 1900. Serial No. 29,681. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:i
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Barron and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Governors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in speed-governors for steam-engines, and has for its object to provide simple and effective governor mechanism for automatically regu-v lating the supply of steam and speed of the piston and insuring a smooth and regular motion of the piston at a determined rate of speed.
With this and other minor objects in View, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a rotary engine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the governor mechanism, detached from the rotary piston,
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the slide or cross-head thereof.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the engine cylinder, composed of corresponding heads 2 and 3, formed with inwardly-projecting rims 4, which are adapted to fit togetherY steam-tight, and with central openings 5, around which extend internal grooves 6, in which flanges 7 upon the sides of the piston 8 are adapted to it steam-tight.
9 and 10 designate the steam supply and exhaust pipes of the cylinder, and 11 the driveshaft, carrying the piston and extending through the said openings 5. A plug-valve 12 governs the passage of steam through the said supply-pipe 9.
The governor mechanism for regulating the supply of steam to and speed of rotation of the piston is exposed at one of the cylinderopenings 5 and comprises a disk 18, fixed to one side of the piston and provided with a series of radial slots 11. In these slots are 5 mounted sliding blocks 15,carrying segmental guides 16 and fitted to slide radially toward and from the drive-shaft by centrifugal action upon rods I7. The blocks are normally pressed inwardly by coiled springs 18, which may be adjusted to vary their tension and resistance to the outward movement of the blocks by adj usting-nuts 19, threaded on Said rods. To the cylinder head or section 2 is attached a standard or arm 20, provided at its upper end with grooved guides or ways 21,- in which a cross-head or slide 22 is slidably mounted. This cross-head is connected to the plug-valve 12 in the supply-pipe 9 by a connectingrod 23 and is provided with guideflanges 24, fitting in said ways 2l and terminating in fingers 21a, and upon its inner side with spaced Wings 25, between which the guides 16 of the blocks 15 move as the piston revolves. The blocks 15 may be adjusted to move outward at any desired speed of the piston by regulating the pressure of the springs 18. When the speed of the piston passes beyond the proper point, the blocks 15 are moved outward by centrifugal force, overcoming the pressure of the springs and moving the crosshead 22 outward to close the valve 12 to cut off the supply of steam to a greater or Yless extent. When the speed of the piston falls below that intended, the springs 18 force the blocks 15 inward, retracting the cross-head and opening the valve 12 to again admit steam. The iingers 24Ea are adapted to bear upon the wall of the opening 5 when the crosshead is moved outward to near the end of its stroke to prevent the cross-heads from moving out of line and binding.
The outward radial movement of the blocks 15 necessarily causes the segmental guides 16 to form, together with the intervening spaces, an irregular curve. As, however, but a slight outward movement of the blocks is required to operate the valve, this variation in the form of the curve described by said guides is practically immaterial and is not suiicient to prevent the perfect movement of said segmental guides between the spaced wings 25 of the cross head 22. If any slight interference should exist, it may be readily remedied by spacing the wings 25 farther apart or by liaring the ends of said wings, so as to provide ICO for the ready bringing of each guide into accurate alinement with the channel between said wings, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be readily understood without a further extended description, and it will be seen that a simple and effective construction.
of governor mechanism is provided.
It will of course be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having Ithus fully described my invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a speed-governor for rotary engines, the combination with a cylinder having a valved supply-pipe, and a piston, of a disk carried by the piston and provided with rotary slots, guide-rods in said slots, blocks carrying segmental guides and slidably mounted on the rods, springs acting to force the blocks inwardly, a guide upon the cylinder, a crosshead slidably mounted in said guide and provided with wings in which said segmental guides on the blocks are adapted to move, and a connecting-rod between the cross-head and valve in the supply-pipe, substantially as set forth.
2. In a speed-governor for rotary engines, the combination with a cylinder having a valved supply-pipe, and a piston, of a disk carried by the piston and provided with radial slots, guide-rods in said slots, blocks carrying segmental guides and slidably mounted on the rods, springs acting to force the blocks inwardly, means for adjusting the tension of said springs, a guide upon the cylinders, a cross-head provided with guide-lingers and slidably mounted in said guide and also provided with wings to engage said segmental guides on the blocks, and a connecting-rod between the cross-head and Valve in the supply-pipe, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES C. MURPHY.
