The reciprocation ot'A the clutching-bands may be effected, as herein shown, by means of eccentrics mounted on the driving-shaft and connected to the clutching-bands by eccentricrods 12. In order to regulate the stroke of the eccentric-rods 12, and thereby regulate the speed of rotation of the driven shaft o, the eccentrics are adjustablymounted. on the shaft 10, and the latter is made hollow to receivethe devices by which the eccentrics are moved laterally or radially of lthe shaft 10 to vary the throw of the eccentrics.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 15 Arepresents a disk provided with an oblong slot 16, extended to one side of the'center of the disk and which lits upona squared collar 17 on the hollow shaft, thus connecting the disk to the shaft, so as to rotate therewith. The disk 15 -is encircled by a strap or band-18 between side plates or washers 19, whicharc also slot^ ted, as at 26, to correspond'to the slot 16, and the said band or strap preferably moves on antifriction rollers, 21, interposed between said strap andthe disk 15. The eccentricrod 12 is attached to the strapl or band 18. The hollow shaft 10 and its collar 17 are provided with longitudinal slots of substantially thev width of the eccentric disks, through which extend keys or wedges l23 24, having their rear edges straight and fitted into key ways or slots 25 26, formed in the end walls of the slot 16 and provided with beveled or inclined front edges which extend into inclined slots or ways 30 31, made in a rod or section of a rod 32, which fits into the hollow 'shaft 10 and is capable of being moved longitudinally therein. The slots or ways 30 3l in the rod 32 are oppositely inclined and are separated by a web or wall 33, extended longitudinally of the said rod, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. i g y From the'above description and by reference to Figs. l and 2 it will be seen that if the rod-32 is moved in thehollow shaft in the direction indicated by-arrow 40, Fig. 1, the inclinedweb 33 will force the wedge 24 out from the hollow shaft, and thus move the disk V15-frorn the concentric position represented by full lines,` Figs. 1 and 2, into a position eccentric to the hollow shaft, as represented by dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2,-. and the extent of eccentricity given to the disks is ldependent upon the speed it is desired to impartto the driven shaft a, for by varying the throw of the eccentric/s the speed of the driven shaft may be varied so as to propel the vehicle at any desired rate of speed within limits. The clutch mechanisms and the eccentric disks mayI `be confined in a chamber 60, formed in the main casing and provided with a removable cover 61. The inclosing casing is provided with lugs 62, which rest upon the shaft 63, which may be the rear axle of the vehicle, and the front end of the casing may IOO cated above and below a projection or lug..

By means of the speed-changing mechanism herein shown the'engine may be run continuously and, if desired, at full speed at all times, for when the disks e are concentric with the follow shaft 10 motion is not im parted to the driven shaft; but, if desired, the full power of the engine maybe gradually applied to the shaft a by gradually moving the disks 15 from their concentric to theirv full eccentric position, which is very desirable.
