A1o the drawingsrepresenting like parts,
This invention relates toV anovel driving mechanism, especially designed and adapted, among other uses, to be employed on automobiles to effect travel of the same in either 15 direction with a minimum .vibration of the 'p For this purpose we employ a pluvehicle. rality of friction-clutches of a construction as will be described, which are mounted on' a shaft to be driven and which are actuated by zo a plurality of eccentrics on a driving-shaft. The eccentrics are and may be adj ustably 'mounted on the driving-shaft, so as to vary their throw, and thus change the speed of rotation of the driven shaft,as will be described. z 5 -A plurality of eccentrics are employed, which are set so as to avoid' dead-centers in the rotation of the driven shaft, and the parts of the driving mechanism are and may be in,- closed in a dust and Water proof casing, as These and other features claims at theend of this specification.
Figure lis a partial plan and sectional ViewI of a vdriving mechanism embodyingthis in- 35 vention; Fig. 2, a detail in section on the line 2 2, Fig. l; Fig. 8i, a side elevation of the mechanism shown in Fig. l, and Fig. 4a diagram representing the relative positions of the eccentric disks,
4o Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, o, represents a shaft to be driven, and for this purpose it hasl Application-lled October 19,1900.` Serial No. 33,636.v (No model.)
- mnvable bander ring j, which encircles the disk c between said side plates and which fits closelyV thereon, but is 'yet free to be moved about said disk.k The disks e are arranged on vthe shaft @,with corresponding recesses g 5 5 inalinement, and through each set of recesses, comprisingthose in alineinent, is extended an actuating device for the rollers h, which device is shown as a bar la, having a series of cam-shaped notches Z, which are adapted to 6o coperate with a series of studs or pins fm, located at the narrower orsmaller end of thel recess and attached to the disks'c., The bars k are adapted to be moved transversely -ofl` the disks byend plates or disks n o, mounted 65 on the shaft a to move longitudinally thereon and connected together by the ltie-rods p. One of the end plates, as o, is provided with a hub q, adapted to be moved longitudinally of the shaft a by an elbow-lever o', to which 7o is connected an actuating-rod s, which' in practice is `extended to within reach of the, operator. The actuating rod or bar 7c for the friction-rollers h when moved in one direction, so that one edge of said bar engages the ,7 5. studs or pins m, as represented in lligz` 1,' moves-the friction-rollers withwhich it co-y operates backward in the recesses g, which are made deeper at their'rear end, so that the friction-rollers may be removed from contact `8c with the `movable or clutching band er ring j,
and when the bar 7c is moved sothatits camnotches engage the studs or pins m the friction-rollers aremoved forward into engaging or wedging position with the band j by springs l 85V t or other suitable yielding devices.H d
Thevmovable or clutching band j is designed to have an oscillating or rotary reciprocating' movement, and in order to edect movement` of the clutch disks `e,.and thereby of the 9o.l
driven shaft'a, in eitherdirection the recesses g are oppositely arranged in pairs, and the cam or actuating bars 7a are oppositely arranged, so' that when the cam-notches of "one of said cam-bars are in engagement With their 95 p coperating pins the clutching-bands will beelfective on their movement in one direction-'- as, for instance, on the forward movement-e 'anid`willbe non-eectiv'e on the return` movement, Whereas when the positions of the camroo tive or effective on their return movement and are inactive on their forward movement.,
The reciprocation ot'A the clutching-bands may be effected, as herein shown, by means of eccentrics mounted on the driving-shaft and connected to the clutching-bands by eccentricrods 12. In order to regulate the stroke of the eccentric-rods 12, and thereby regulate the speed of rotation of the driven shaft o, the eccentrics are adjustablymounted. on the shaft 10, and the latter is made hollow to receivethe devices by which the eccentrics are moved laterally or radially of lthe shaft 10 to vary the throw of the eccentrics.
inasmuch asthe three eecentrics connected to the three clutch-bands are the saine', a detailed description of one will suffice forl all.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 15 Arepresents a disk provided with an oblong slot 16, extended to one side of the'center of the disk and which lits upona squared collar 17 on the hollow shaft, thus connecting the disk to the shaft, so as to rotate therewith. The disk 15 -is encircled by a strap or band-18 between side plates or washers 19, whicharc also slot^ ted, as at 26, to correspond'to the slot 16, and the said band or strap preferably moves on antifriction rollers, 21, interposed between said strap andthe disk 15. The eccentricrod 12 is attached to the strapl or band 18. The hollow shaft 10 and its collar 17 are provided with longitudinal slots of substantially thev width of the eccentric disks, through which extend keys or wedges l23 24, having their rear edges straight and fitted into key ways or slots 25 26, formed in the end walls of the slot 16 and provided with beveled or inclined front edges which extend into inclined slots or ways 30 31, made in a rod or section of a rod 32, which fits into the hollow 'shaft 10 and is capable of being moved longitudinally therein. The slots or ways 30 3l in the rod 32 are oppositely inclined and are separated by a web or wall 33, extended longitudinally of the said rod, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. i g y From the'above description and by reference to Figs. l and 2 it will be seen that if the rod-32 is moved in thehollow shaft in the direction indicated by-arrow 40, Fig. 1, the inclinedweb 33 will force the wedge 24 out from the hollow shaft, and thus move the disk V15-frorn the concentric position represented by full lines,` Figs. 1 and 2, into a position eccentric to the hollow shaft, as represented by dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2,-. and the extent of eccentricity given to the disks is ldependent upon the speed it is desired to impartto the driven shaft a, for by varying the throw of the eccentric/s the speed of the driven shaft may be varied so as to propel the vehicle at any desired rate of speed within limits. The rod 32 may and preferably will be made in sections to facilitate cutting or milling of ther inclined slots or ways 30 31, after which the Vfriction-balls 44 45.
crece/r said sections are pinned or otherwise connected' together and to an end section having a socket41 in its outer end to receive a headed rod 42, which is retained in the socket 41 by a threaded plug or nut 43, the head of said rod having raceways forthe reception of'anti- The rod 42 is connected f to an actuating-lcverf-46.
The eccentric disks are set with .their slots 16 one hundred Aand tw-enty degrees apart, and the sections'of the rod 32 are correspondingly set, jso that their wedge Ways or slots 30 3l are one hundred and twenty degrees dred and twenty degrees apart they assume v the positions indicated in the diagram Fig. 4. The hollow shaft 10 may be rotated, as herein shown, by a gasolene or other engine 50, erected upon a casingl, which supports the engine-shaft 52, provided with the fly-wheel 53 and connected to the hollow`shaft'10by gears 54 55 56, which are located in an auxiliary chamber 57, formed by a flange 58 on the side platelf) of the main casing and by a cover or plate 60.y
The clutch mechanisms and the eccentric disks mayI `be confined in a chamber 60, formed in the main casing and provided with a removable cover 61. The inclosing casing is provided with lugs 62, which rest upon the shaft 63, which may be the rear axle of the vehicle, and the front end of the casing may IOO cated above and below a projection or lug..
66 on said casing. The axle 63 may be driven from the shaft a bygears 67 68.
By means of the speed-changing mechanism herein shown the'engine may be run continuously and, if desired, at full speed at all times, for when the disks e are concentric with the follow shaft 10 motion is not im parted to the driven shaft; but, if desired, the full power of the engine maybe gradually applied to the shaft a by gradually moving the disks 15 from their concentric to theirv full eccentric position, which is very desirable.
