UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HASLAM, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND.
*,DRlvlNc-RQLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of VIletrs :Patent No. 678,175, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed OctohrZZ, 1900. Serial Ilo. 33,954. v(No model.)
To all whom t may concern: Y
Beit known that I, JAMES HASLAM, tin-plate worker, a subject of the Queen o fEn gland, residing at Romer street, Touge, Bolton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving-Rollers, of which the following is a speci- ,fication This invention refers to improvements in or relating to tinned iron and other rollers, and means for coupling, supporting, and strengthening the saine, and it includes certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
. Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improvements in the rollers employed for driving the spindles of 1nules,thros tlc-fram es, and other textile machinery, such as ring-frames, winding-frames, and the like; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improvements wherein the ends of two rollers are coupled together; Fig. 3, an end View of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a reduced plan of my improvements in rollers and the means and method of driving the same; and Fig. 5, an end View of Fig. 4, showing the endless band for driving the said rollers and keeping them in unison.
Arepresents the tinned iron or other metallic rollers; B, cast-iron or other metallic bosses cast to the circular ends; C, circular ends; D, centers for carrying the tinned iron or other metallic rollers to be mounted in the usual bearings located on the framework of the machines to which they are applicable; E, centers for coupling the tinned iron or other metallic rollers together, according to the number required in a machine or frame; F, endless driving band or rope, and G-carrier-pulleys.
In all the figures the same letters are employed to indicate corresponding parts.
To each end of the tinned iron or other metallic roller A is attached the tinned iron Vor other metallic circular end C, provided with the curved edge or periphery I, in which is located the wire or metallic strengtheningring H, the curved edge or periphery I being formed so as to allow of the end or edge of the tinned iron or other metallic roller A abutting against the wire or strengthening-ring H, after which the end of the said roller A and the circular end C are secured together in the usual manner by means of solder. The circular ends C are constructed with the circular indents J for the purpose of strengthening the same and preventing buckle After the circular ends C have been constructed in the form or manner set forth and as shown in the drawings they are secured to the cast-iron or metallic bosses B during the operation of casting the latter, being placed in the mold rior to running in the molten t metal. To insure of the circular ends C being thoroughly secured to the cast-iron or metallic bosses B, they are provided with the holes K, through which the molten metal flows in forming the langes L, as vshown in Figs. 1 and 2. In constructing the ends of the tinned iron or other metallic roller A with the band or` rope pulley M the latter is made in halves circumferentially, as shown in Fig. 1, one half being provided with the bent end ct, which overlaps the curved edge or periphery I of the tinned iron or other metallic circular end C, and to which it is secured by means of solder. To the periphery N of the rope or band pulley M is secured the other half or side f by means of solder at c, and the projecting end d is bent over the inner periphery of the half or side f of the rope or band pulley M, after which it is secured by means of solder at e,thus forming the rope or band pulley M, as shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the side f of the rope or band pulley M is provided with the curved edge or periphery g, in which is located the Wire or metallic ring h for the purpose of strengthening the same.
The center E, employed for carrying and connecting the ends of the tinned or other rollers A together, is mounted in the bearing R, attached to the cross-bar S, supported from any suitable or convenient part of the machine or frame to which this invention may be applied. The centersD and E are secured in the bosses B by the set-screws W, as shown in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive.
The tinned iron or other metallic rollers A are rotated in the direction indicated by the arrows, as shown in Fig. 5, the endless drivroo'- ing band or rope F being carried and guided by the carrierpulleys Gr, mounted on the centers V, the latter being supported in fixings or bearings attached in any suitable manner to any convenient part of the machine or frame to which they may be applied. To facilitate balancing and the true rotary rnotion of the rollers A, the bosses B are provided with the projection X to equalize the Weight of the boss tand the projecting portion of the set-screws IV. If desired, the bosses B may he split7 and secured by rings, bolts, setscrews, and the like. Y
The wires II and 7L may be tinned to facilitate annealing for strengthening purposes.
I-Iaving now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the saine is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is l. A roller A having the metallic circular end C provided With the circular indent J and the curved edge or periphery I, the strengthening-ring II Within said curved edge and against which abuts the end or edge of said roller, said circular end C having holes K, a cast-iron boss I3 having anges overlapping the end C, a shaft E, and set-screws to Secure the boss to said shaft.
2. A metallic roller A having attached thereto, a metallic circular end C provided with a circular indent J and the curved edge or periphery I, the strengthening-ring II Within said curved edge and against which the end .of said roller A abuts, the band 0r rope pul- EDMUND CIIADWICK, JAS.
