NELLIE J. YOUNG, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GARMENT FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,810, dated June 18, 1901. Application filed August 2 3, 1900. Serial No. 27,771. (No model.)
T0 50% whom it mag concern.-
Be it known that I, NELLIE J YOUNG, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garment-fasteners, designed for fastening or securing one garment to another or for fastoning together the meeting or overlapping edges of a single garment.
One object of the invention is to provide a garment-fastener applicable for use on various garments, such as shirt and corset waists or dress-skirts, and especiallyadapted for fastening dress-shields in place.
A further object is to provide a fastener which will not chafe or Wear the garment or garments to which it is attached.
A further object is to provide a fastener in which the members when united will be held snugly together and prevented from sliding on each other from side to side and from becoming accidentally separated.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are perspectives of the two members of the fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the members inverted. Fig. 4 is a perspective showing the members connected. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the members of the fastener attached to a garment and united. Fig. 6 is a similar view on a line at right angles to the sectionline of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a section of awaist, showing the method of fastening a dressshield in place with my improved fastener. Fig. Sis a sectional view on the line 00 no of Fig. 7.
In the drawings, 2 represents a disk, plate, or button forming one member of the fastener and considerably enlarged to more clearly illustrate the construction of the device. The plate is provided with a series of points or prongs 3, adapted to pierce the material of which the garment is composed and be clenched therein to secure the plate in positiou. Any other suitable means may be provided for securing said plate, such as forming a series of holes in the edges of the same and sewing it to the garment. Near the center of said plate I provide a short-necked stud 4, surmounted by a head 5, having a curved or crowning top 6, whereby said head gradually increases in depth or thickness from its ends toward the center, for the purpose hereinafter described. The other member of the fastener consists of a correspondingly shaped plate, disk, or button 7, also enlarged and provided with the flexible fastening prongs or points similar to those already described. The plate 7 has a slot 8 near its cen- ,ter corresponding in shape to the head 5 and adapted to receive the same when the members of the fastener are brought together. On the under side of said plate 7 I provide a curved or arched shield or guard 9, that is struck up, preferably, out of the metal of which the plate 7 is composed when the slot 8 is formed; but said shield may be formed separately and soldered or otherwise secured over the slot, if preferred.
When the shield or guard is formed or punched out of the plate 7, spaces are provided upon each side between it and the edges of the slot to receive the wedge-shaped ends of the head 5, so that when the head is inserted into the slot and turned a quarter of a revolution its ends will enter the spaces between said shield and the edges of the slot and be wedged therein and prevent the members from sliding on each other when in use or from becoming accidentally separated. The center or thickest portion of the head will be under the middle portion of the arched guard or shield, which will prevent the head from wearing or chafing that portion of the garment to which the slotted member of the fastener is secured, and, owing to the arched or curved form of the shield, the head will be prevented from sliding lengthwise in the slot and will remain near the center of the same when the device is in use.
To connect the members of the fastener, one of them is twisted or rotated sufficiently to allow the headed shank or stud to enter the slot, and upon releasing the member or returning it to its normal position the head will occupy a transverse position with respect to the slot and shield, and the members will be locked securely together.
The device may be stamped from sheet metal and made of any suitable size. It may be used to fasten the meeting or overlapping edges of shirt-waists or other garments, and it is particularly adapted for fastening dressshields in place, as it permits the wearer to easily and quickly secure them in a garment and as readily remove them whenever it is desired to transfer them to another garment.
The plates or buttons may be made round or polygonal, as preferred, and other means than I have shown may be employed for securing the members to a garment or garments, and in various ways the details of the fastener may be modified without departing from my invention.
Vhile my improved fastener is especially adapted for use on garments of various kinds, it will be understood that it is equally applicable to other articles where a fastener that is simple in construction and easily and quickly operated can be conveniently used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-fastener, comprising two plates or members and means for securing them to a gar ment, one plate being provided witha shank 0r stud having an elongated head thereon, the other having a slot to receive said head when the plates are placed together, and a shield or guard pressed or punched out of said last-named plate by the formation of said slot therein, said guard permitting the insertion of said head into said slot and the rotation of its shank therein, but preventing .said head from chafing the garment to which said slotted plate is attached, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-fastener, comprising two plates or members having suitable means for securing them to the overlapping or meeting edges of a garment or garments, one of said plates being provided with a short shank or stud having an elongated head, said head being provided with a curved or crowning surface, the other plate being provided with a slot adapted to receive said head and stud when the plates are placed together, and an arched or curved guard provided lengthwise over said slot and engaging the middle portion of said head when turned transversely to said slot, whereby said head will be normally held in the middle of said slot and sliding of said plates on each other prevented, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a garment-fastener, comprisingtwo plates or members provided with suitable means for securing them to the meeting or overlapping edges of a garment or garments, a shank or stud provided on one of said plates, an elongated head thereon having a curved or crowning upper surface, and its ends wedge-shaped in form, the other plate or member being provided with a slot adapted to receive said head and shank when the plates are placed together, an arched or curved guard or shield provided lengthwise over said slot, whereby when said head is inserted through said slot and turned transversely to the same its middle portion will be enlarged by the arch of said guard and its ends will be wedged between said guard and the edges of said slot and sliding of the plates or accidental separation of the same prevented, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of August, 1900.
