UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KATHARINE ZUBER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 676,294, dated June '11, 1901.
Application filed March 9, 1901. Serial No. 03474. (No model.)
To all whom it may 'conceidz: 7
Be it known that I, KATHARINE ZUBER, a citizen of the-United States, residin g in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Garment Hooks or Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a garment-hook composed of wire having a resilient guard for the bill thereof, the same being formed of two members, a back formed of two members, a bill, and fastening-eyes, one of the members of said guard being continuous of one of the fastening-eyes and one of the members of said back being continuous of the other eye,
the terminals of the piece of wire or other material of which the hook is formed being located at the places of junction of the two attachingeyes, respectively, with one of the adjacent guard members and with one of the adjacent back members, the raw ends of said material thus being covered and so prevented from cutting, scratching, &c., andbeing also removed for similar purposes from the bill and guard, and said terminals may be tightly closed against the contiguous members, the guard possessing great resiliency, so as to firmly retain its closed position, and may be readily opened while it overhangs the outer bend of the bill, while the hook is of simplificd construction and less expensive than an article of similar class as heretofore made.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a garment-hook embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a garment-hook, the same consisting of the bill B, the back 0, fastening-eyes D D, and guard Er In carrying out my invention I take a piece of wire or other suitable material and form one of the eyessay the eye Dand then continue the wire or material forward, as at G, and bend'it into the bill Band continue it backward, forming the member F, the members F and G constituting the back 0. The wire or material is again. bent forward over the bill B and again backward, producing the two members H and J, which constitute the guard E, the member H being continued and joining the eye D, it now being noticed that the wire or material has its terminals or ends ct b at the inner sides of the eyes D D and that the back is composed of two niembersF and G and the guard E overhangs the bill B. Furthermore, the terminals of the material of which the fastener is formed may be pressed tightly against the contiguous members GH, respectively, thus reliably closing the eyes and preventing the existence of open joints through which the fastening-stitching may escape. The guard prevents the eye member from passing over said bill, and thus being disengaged from the hook, it being evident that in applying the eye member it is pressed between the bill and guard and the latter yields, allowing said eye member to reach the bill and be seated thereomsaid guard then closing toward or against the bill as its normal position. In order to further retain the eye member on the bill, the member F of the back 0 is deflected toward the bill, forming the jaw K, which in a measure acts as a barrier to the disengagement of the eye member from the bill, while it is sufficiently resilient to be overcome when the eye member is properly pressed thereagainst in its passage over the bill. It will also be seen that the guard E extends from what maybe termed the rear of the hook, or from the portion containing the fastening-eyes, and overhangs the outer bend of the bill, so that it is of considerable length and possesses increased resiliency, so that it closes the bill from without and effectually protects the eye member from displacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garment fastener, constructed of two members comprising the back, anattachingeye continuous of one of said members, a twopart guard, and another attaching-eye, one of the parts of said guard being continuous of one of the back members and the other part being continuous of the last-named eye, the ends of the material of which the fastener is formed being located at the places of junc tion of the two attaching-eyes, respectively,
with one of the adjacent guard members and with one of the adjacent back members.
KATHARINE ZUBER.
