IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR GARBURETTING AIR.
@ige tlgthnlt rettreh tu in this: rttcrs @anni mth milking part nf tige samt..
TO ALL WI-IOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Bc it known that I, F. S. PEASE, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie1 and State oi' New York, have'invcnted a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Carburetting Air; and I do hereby declare the following to bc a full and exact description of thesa'me, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which' are made part of-this specification, and in which- A Figure 1 is a central vertical section.
Figures 2 and 3 are central vertical sections through the carburetter.
Figure 4 is a perspective view ofthe zigzag air-passage.
Figure 5 is a view of a. seriesy of air-holders, the air-pump, and carbretters.
Figure 6 is a vertical section through the regulator. i
Similarlettcrs of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The earburetting apparatusv and the air-pump are contained within the holder which contains the com pressedffair.y The air condensed by thepnmp and stored inthe reservoir passes through the Carburettor and a gas-regulator to the burner. The air is injected at the lower` portion ofthe carbnrelter, and ascends,in contactwith the under surfaces of a s eries of inclined planes lwith anged edges andends, passing from one incline to another-in a zigzag'npward course to the chamber from whence it is drawn for use.
In the drawings, A represents ast-rung chamber suitably constructed to .become a reservoir of compressed air, \\hielr,iscondensed therein by the/action ofthe air-pump Brtlhe'downward rnotiouot` whose piston .empties the contents of the cylinder .into the reservoir through thel valve-wayY h, the valve closing during the'upivard stroke of the piston andthe valve c in the piston opening. The' condensed air l through .the pipe C, to thc bottom of thev carburetting-ehamber D, which contains 'u 'quantity of hydrocarbon liquid. The air is discharged at the opening underneath the inclined platcillE, which-has flanges, Ve, on its sides to compel the air to rise in 'Contact with the undersurface of the said plate, and preveUts'its escape at the sides or edges.' When the air in. its ascent has reached the upper edge of the plate E,v it ascends through the serrated openings and rises until it strikes ythe under edge of' the secondplate El, and so on until ithas finishedit-s tortuous course' andl escapes above the upper inclined platcE into the space above through `thc centra-l pipe I" and the orificesfto thc reservoir of carb-urettcd air, from whenceil, issus by pipc This apparatus may he usedfor carburet-ting air or enriching gas, an'd the pressure in equalized by means of the gas-regulator see'n in section in iig. 6. -It consists o. f-af val\'e,-I, and an elastic diaphragm, operated by the pressure of gas-inthe chamber K, and adjusted by moans of the sliding or screwrod Il. The diaphragm may c'onsist of India rubber or other elastic material,'anda spring, m, l'to assist it in :maintaining itself` against the pressure of the gas. The valve'l I is attached to a stem, K, and passes through the axial centre' of the regulator, haringen adjustment in the disks P, which embrace the membrane J, or in thebosses attuchedlto said disks. The object of the regulator is to allow given quantities of air to pass' in given times regardless of the pressure in the chamber A. l
Its opcrntion'is as follows: Suppose the pressure m the condensed-air rcserroir -A to be thirty pounds to4 the inch, and it be desired that' a sut'cient amount' sho'uld pass the valve-way to supply ten burnersQthc stem is 'adjusted so that thean'nular opening round the valve shall permit the desired quantity to passi.` This lmay be deterrninedhy watching the burners, and turning the stem in one direction or the other till the burners are properly adjusted. New, as the air passesv from the reservoir A thev pressure therein will become lessened and the membrane .I will cause the valve I to take position further away from its seat, enlarging the area of opening. If additional 'air bc pumped intoreservoir A theimembrane J will be expanded by the pressure and the spring M contracted, bringing the valt'e nearer to its seat, so that with the increased pressure and rapidity of passage the orifice shall be contracted in a. corresponding degree to equalize the ilow. The spring m reacts against the spring 'na-as the pressure decreases, to procent the spring operating in full force to open smaller numbers of burners the stenlJ is turned in one or the other direction to proportion the valvular orifice to its new duty- A Fig. 5 shows nn"arrangement of three barrels connected by pipes, and an air-pump connected to one of thorn,
and condensed therein, being afterwards utilized-by passage through the carburetter and thence to the burners.
passes frein. the chamber A,y
the-hydrocarbon fluid, when it. issues v consequent by which air is forced into the barrels.
'.lho regulator may beplzwefl in th'epipc connecting the air-reservoir with the cnrburetter, er beyond the cnr- .'mrctter, and bet'u'een it und the burner. y 'Ihe nir passing upward ageinst theunder surfaces of the plates E, etc.. docs not agitato. thcxliquid so much as when it is simplyinjectcd into the cerburetterund allowed to reach the surface hyrising directly thereto` This effect to subdue the agitation is gained whuteverlumy be the height of' the liquid.
I I l s n n Having described my 1nvention,'wh.1t I claim theroln asnew, und desire to secure by Letters Patent, xs-
1. The combinzltion of the .strong nr-rcservoir, the air-pump, und the curburet-ter, the-lutter-"two being' contained within `the former.
2. I claim the curburctter constructed, as described, with inclined flanged plates in ascending zigzag series, 'with the airfollowing their under surfaces, substantially :ts described. 'Y
B. The regulator, constructed as described, consisting of the membrane J, the adjustable rod L, valve I, und the valvulnr openiny,7 constructed and oncratinl; subsmntiully as described.Y
4.- I claim the inclined flanged platdE, with s'erl'xtefl edges, 'operating as described. l
5. I claim the arrangiamento? the series of condensedmir holders, constructed of air-tight casks, and'ceml binedwith :m air-pump und cnrburetter, substantially :is described.
'To the nbove'specifcation of my improvement I have signed my hand this 19th day of March, 1867.
