Description
rr STATES PHILIP SHERRER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BRANDING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lraamt No. 675,642, dated June 4, 190i. Application filed August 8, 1900. Serial No. 26,216. (No model.)
To all 1071/0711/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP SHERRER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Branding- Machines, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to improvements in so-called branding-machines, and it con- 4standards A A, thespindle B, the clamps O O,
the guide and tie bar D, adjustable branding-irons E E, hydrocarbon-burners F F for heating said irons, and an adjustable support for the packages to be branded.
The standards A A are adapted to receive the spindle B, as at a a, and the bar D, as at b b. The spindle is screw-threaded right and left, into the threads of which engage the clamps O O with their screw-threaded hub c. The lower arm CZ of each terminates in a sleeve d', which has sliding connection with the guide D. The upper arm e is bifurcated, as at f f, and adapted for support of the branding-irons E E, as at g g. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) Said branding-irons have upon their face sides raised letters or signs suited for being burned into the packages to be thus marked. The heating of the irons is eected by means of the burners F F, which receive hydrocarbon fuel from overhead tanks, as indicated at h. The flame of said burners is directed against the inner side of said irons approximately centrally, so that the latter will become evenly heated.
Springs i i are provided for a yielding adjustment of the irons upon the packages to be branded.
The support for the packages comprises the saddle Gr, the cross-head l-I, spindle I ,and hand-wheel J. The rods jj of the saddle eX- tend through the lugs 7s 7o of the cross-head,- as shown in Fig. 3. The spindle I is held in secure position between the spindle B and bar D by means of the cross-head II and the bearing Z. As shown, collars are employed for retaining the cross-head in iixed position with regard to the spindle, but other suitable provisions may be made to accomplish this. The screw hand-wheel J is placed upon the spindle I for the purpose of raising packages in proper position for being branded. The rods j j engage into the circular groove fm in the disk part of said wheel. Thus upon turning of said wheel the saddle can be raised to suit conditions. Furthermore, the groove m can serve in the nature of a lubricant-receptacle, and in placing lubricants therein the frictional resist-ance of the rods is reduced to a minimum in raising or turning the wheel J. In lowering the wheel the saddle will follow of its own accord.
Preferably to the right of spindle B is secured a large hand-wheel K, whereby the clamps can be tightened upon the packages to be branded and also loosened therefrom when the packages are branded. Furthermore, the spindle B affords adjustment of the clamps to suit the length of packages, while the spindle I enables raising and lowering of the saddlel to arrange the different-sized packages in proper position vertically. Obviously this saddle-lifting device may be modied in the construction of its constituent parts-v that is, the style of connecting said parts may vary from the one shown and yet answer the purpose for which it is intended.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a branding-machine the combination of a pair of fixed standards, a right and left hand screw spindle journaled in said standards, a pair of clamps in threaded engagement with said spindle and sliding Contacty with a oie-bar of said standards, brandingirons carried by said clamps and an adjustable support constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a branding-machine having an adjustable support for the packages to be branded thereupon the said support; comprising a saddle with depending rods, a cross-head Io guiding sa'id rods, a fixed spindle and a screw
