VIIWIIIIlfllllll/lfIl/I/IlllIf!IlllI/lf/I/ IIIIIIIl/ffI/II UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. W'ILBUR, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSlGNOlt TO THE lVEIR STOVE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COOKING STOVE OR RANGE.
forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,432, dated June 4, 1901.
Application filed December 10, 1900. Serial No, 39,451. (No model.)
To (all whom 2 1'; may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. \VILBUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Mes sachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawii1gs,forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a range or stove having a construction or form of broiler-opening to the fire-pot and of a door for opening and closing the same, wherebya horizontal entrance to the combustion-chamber above the fire is alforded from the outlet the stove and through which a broiler may be introduced to the lire without liability of bringing the hand holding it into contact with the open door or the stove or range.
I will now describe the invention in connection with the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a range having the features of my invention, the broiler-door being represented as open. Fig. 2 is a View in vertical section of a portion of a range from side to side, the broiler-opening being represented as closed. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the end of the stove containing the broiler-opening and door, the door being represented as wide open.
A is the lire-pot of the range.
B is the combustion-chamber above the fire pot and of the ordinary character of such chambers.
c is the broiler opening through the end of the range to the combustion-chamber and through which the broiler is introduced to the combustion-chamber over the fire. The opening is arranged between the front fire-brick a of the fire-pot or the water-coil or water-back, if one be used, and the top plate D of the range. The end walls 0 c and the bottom 0 of the broiler-opening are formed by a casting, which is attached to and forms a part of the end of the range. The outer faces 0 of the end walls 0 c are inclined from the top plate D downward and outward and form with the outer edge of the bottom 0 an inclined seat for the door 0 to the broiler-opening when it is closed.
The door 0 is so constructed and hung to the range that when wide open to uncover the broiler-opening it occupies a horizontal position considerably below the bottom of the broiler-opening, and so out of range of possible contact of the hand holding the broiler with it. It is represented in its closed position in Fig. 2 in full lines and by dotted lines in its open position. It is also represented as open in Figs. 1 and 3. The door preferably comprises a casting having a main part a, which is of a size to close the broiler-opening and in which are air-inlets c opened and closed by a sliding damper 0 It also comprises a part 0 which extends at a right angle from the lower edge of the part c and which when the door is closed extends under the bottom 0 of the opening. (See Fig. 2.) This part c of the door also serves to hold the part 0 when the door is wide open in a horizontal position away from the end of the range at some distance below the broileropening. (See Fig. 3.) The part c of the door has at each end pivots o which enter the vertical or substantially vertical slots 0 in the wings or brackets c a attached to the end of the range for the support of the door. (See Figs. 1 and The slots permit the vertical movement of the door necessary in latching it to the range in closing and in unlatching it from the range in opening. The door also supports upon its outer side a perforated ornamental plate E, the upper portion of which forms a continuation of the molding or edge at of the top plate D of the area of the broiler-opening, but also to one which permits the broiler to be held closely to the opening and to be manipulated above the door without bringing the hand into contact with the door.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1.-In a cooking stove or range a broileropening in the combustion-chamber, the upper wall of said opening being formed by the top plate of the stove or range, a door for opening and closing said opening, having hinges or connections with the range offset 'at their lower ends inwardly whereby the door when wide open is held considerably from and below the line of opening, and when closed will engage said top plate as described.
2. In a cooking stove or range in combination a broiler opening in the combustionchamber, the upper wall of which is formed by the top plate of said stove or range, a door for opening and closing said opening, having ofifset hinges or connections and means for attaching them to the stove or range below the broiler-opening, said door engaging the edge of said top plate when closed, and when opened is held below the line of said broiler-opening, as described.
3. The combination in a cooking stove or range of a broiler-opening in its end having side and bottom walls, wings orbrackets upon each side of the side walls having vertical slots therein and a door for closing and opening said broiler-opening having at its lower end a lateral extension below the bottom of the broiler-opening provided with pivots which enter the vertical slots of the brackets and a latching device for latching the door to the stove or range when in a position closing the opening.
4. The combination in a cooking stove or range of a top plate cut away at its edge to expose a portion of the broiler-opening, the said broiler-opening having Walls 0 c and bottom 0 arranged with respect to the top plate as described, slot-ted brackets attached to the end of the stove or range upon each side of the walls 0 0 a broiler-opening door to shut against the walls of the openinghaving an offset extension under the bottom of the opening, pivots carried by said extension to enter said slots, a plate attached to the door forming when closed a portion of the outer rim of the top plate and a locking device carried by the door and by the stove or range which engage each other when the door and said portion of the outer rim of the top plate are in their closed positions.
5. In. a cooking stove or range, a broileropening to the combustion-chamber the upper wall of which is formed by the top plate of the stove or range and the end and lower Walls of which are formed by a casting attached to the end of the stove or range in combination with a door having an oifset section hinged to the stove below the bottom wall of the opening and which door also has a section of the top plate of the stove or range.
