To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN SOHEUBECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a windmill, the object being to provide a device of this character in which any excess of wind-pressure on the wheel is automatically relieved, thereby governing the speed and relieving said wheel and the tower of strains; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing,illustratin g my invention, shows a sectional view of the upper end of a windmill-tower carrying two wheels and showing one of these in longitudinal section and the other thereof in elevation, showing the tube in transverse section.
Referring now to said drawing, 1 indicates a windmill-tower comprising the standards 2, cross-pieces 3, and braces 4. A vertical shaft 5 passes centrally through said tower, being journaled in a step-bearing 6 at its lower end and in bearings 7, carried by the cross-pieces 3, at its upper end. Two or more platforms 8 and 9, the latter carried by'a sleeve 10, journaled in one of said bearings 7, are revolubly mounted in said tower and are connected together by means of standards 11. A sheetmetal chute or tube 12 is mounted between said platforms 8 and 9 and is rigid therewith, said chute or tube being partially cylindrical and partially flaring or conical, and extends horizontally, thus forming a horizontal draftpassage. A horizontal shaft 13 extends centrally through the rear or cylindrical portion of said chute or tube 12, being journaled in bearings 14 and 15, carried, respectively, by one of the standards 11 and by an arm on a middle standard 16, extending between said platforms 8 and 9, adjacent said shaft 5. Said shaft 13 carries two collars 17 and 17 the latter being loosely mounted on a collar 18, which is longitudinally movable on said Serial No. 14,884. (No model.)
shaft 13, and the former being rigid on said shaft, said collars 17 and 17 being provided with flanges 18 and connected together by means of rods 19, secured at their ends to said flanges 18. The hub 20 of the windwheel 21 is longitudinally movable on said shaft 13, and said rods 19 are held by the latter against rotation relatively to said shaft A spring 22 is interposed between the rear end of said hub 20 and the rearmost collar 17 and serves to hold said hub normally at the forward limit of its movement. The blades 23 of said wind-wheel 21 are pivotally mounted on the spokes thereof, the latter being secured at their outer ends in a hoop 24. The lower foremost corner of each of said blades 23 is connected by means of a link 25 with said flange of said collar 17, so that longitudinal movement of said hub 20 causes a pivotal movement of said blades, thereby varying their angle with relation to the wind, and consequently varying or equalizing the wind-pressure. At its forward end said shaft 13 carries a bevel-pinion 26, which meshes With a bevel-gear 27 on said shaft 5. When it is desired to stop the windmill, the blades of the Wheel are turned so as to present only their edges to the Wind, this being efiected by means of said collar 18 on said shaft 13. Said collar 18 is adapted to be moved longitudinally by means of a lever 28 engaging said collar in any suitable manner and which is pivoted between its ends upon the end of an arm 29 on said standard 16, said lever being connected at its upper end with a cord 30, passing over a pulley 31 and carrying a ring 32 at its free end, by means of which it may be attached to a hook 33, located at any suitable place to firmly hold said lever in the desired position to hold said blades, as before mentioned. Said chute or tube is held with its flaring or large end to the wind by means of the vane 34.
