SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,203, dated May 28, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. EASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brakes; and the obj ect of the same is to construct a brake which can be applied to street-oars, wagons, or other vehicles and which will entirely do away with any backlash or lost motion in the brake. With this object in view I have designed the novel construction described in this specification,and clai|ned,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in Which-"- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-truck equipped with my brake. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the eccentrics, together with its rings and brake-block, showing the parts separated. Fig. 4 is a modified form of my eccentric and rings.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a car truck equipped with my brake and having wheels 2. Shafts 3 extend transversely the car parallel to the axles and adjacent thereto, and keyed on these shafts are eccentrics 4, one for each wheel 2. As these eccentrics are identical in construction, but one will be described in detail. Each eccentric 4 is turned off at 5, leaving a central raised rim 6. Rings 7, the width of the portion 5, are mounted on the eccentric and abut the sides of the rim 6. The rings 7 are accurately centered to turn freely on theeocentric 4 and are'of a greater diameter than the rims 6, and the rims 6 prevent all longitudinal movement of the shaft 3. Each of the rings 7 is'provided with integral ears 8 of less width than the thickness of the rings which provides bearings 9 for a brake-shoe 10, mounted between the ears 8 and secured by a bolt 11, passing through perforations 12 in the ears. The brake-shoe 10 is rounded out on its face at 14 on an arc equal to the diameter of the wheels 2.
To operate my brake, an arm 15 is bolted to an eccentric-rim 16 and a connecting-rod 17 pivoted thereto. extends forward and connects with a lever 18, fulcrumed in the front platform. By operating this lever 18 the shaft 3 is rotated, the pair of eccentrics 4 turned in unison, and the brake-shoes 10 set. verse movement of the lever 18 is necessary. It will be noted that the operation of my brake is positive in both directions and there is little or no lost motion or slack in the system.
In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 4 the eccentric 4 is grooved at 19 throughout a portion of its circumference, and a set-screw 20, seated in the rings 7, engages the grooves. By this construction the rings are held against sidewise displacement.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a brake, the combination of a shaft bearing an eccentric keyed thereon and having a raised central rim, rings mounted on said eccentric on each side of said rim, perforated ears on said rings, and a brake-shoe mounted between said ears and secured thereto by a bolt passing through said perforation, substantially as described.
