STEAM-GENERATOR FOR HEATING PURPOSES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, RICHARD T. CRANE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being hadto'the accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specificatiom- My invention relates to thot class of steam-generators which are used forgenerating steam for heating purposes; and to enable those skilled in the art to understand how to make and use my said invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with particularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same. I
.Figure is a rear view or elevation thereof.
Figurefl is a plan section thereof, taken at the line 2: in fig. 2; and
Figure 5 is a detached view of the soot-scraper viewed from the rear.
Similar letters of referencev in the several figures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the brick wall enclosing the generator, which is provided with the doors D, through which the fuel is introduced, and D, from which the ashes are removed, as shown, fig. 2, and also the door at the rear end, marked 13 in said. fig. 2, and one at the side, marked C, shown in fig. 1,said door C beings. long, narrow one, at about midway from front to rear, extending nearly from top to bottom said last-mentioned doors B and G being-for the purpose of enabling a hose to be used to clean and wash the soot and ashes from the pipes as they may require it. The generator hereinafter described is composed of a-series of pipes or coils, as shown,
the entire fire-box. being constructed of said water pipes, the water being introduced into said generator at e, as shown in fig. 2, being received into a header, E, from which the pipes F, forming thebottom and rear portions of the fire-box, open, being connected with the vertical headers G shown at the rear of the generator. From-r said header E, at each end thereof, pipes H lead into two vertical headers, I I, on each side of the fire-box, and of the same height as said fire-box, which are connected by a series of pipes passing around horizontally and forming the sides of the fire-box, and passing across the rear thereof, as seen in fig. 2. Fromthe upper ends .of said headers I pipes K extend up, and connect with the upper part of thegenerator at N, as shown in the drawings, to allow any steam which mightform in the pipes J-to pass up into that part of the generator which is occupied by steam. The pipes F open intoa series of vertical headers, G, at the rear of the apparatus, before mentioned, which extend to the top of-the apparatus, from each'of which headers a system ofpipes extends over to the front of the apparatus, where they are returned again into said headers G, as shown, the lower series of said pipes'L forming the top of the fire-box, the smoke and heat from the fire passing up through the "interstices between the pipes to the top of the apparatus, whence the draughtpasses downthe space X between; the headers G and the rear wall, as seen in fig: 2,- whcre it passes into the flue and escapes. It will be observed that the various pipes L'do not return to the headers 'G in the samevcrtical plane in which they' pass to the front, but are arranged diagonally, as clearly shown in figsrl and 3. I
i The object of this arrangementis to more thoroughly expose the whole system of pipes over the fire-box to the actionof the heat passing'up through them, which'obviously is the practical result thereof. The pipes L, instead of returning, as shown, might terminate at the front of the apparatus, either separ'atelyorin suitable headers. The upper. series of pipes, passing-forward from the headers G, terminates in a series of heads, M, each of which receives four pipes, as represented, and from each of which a pipe, N, leads into a receiver, Q, whence it is distributed as desired. The heads M form also a sort of receptaclc,.inwhich-condensed steainwill remain,
and in the reservoir or receiver 0 a pipe, I, takes. the condensatiom and returns it to the lower part of the generator at E, "as shown." The upper partof the apparatus is occupied by steam, the water occupying'the entire lower partthercof, rising to any desired height, which water-mark or lino'm'ay be determined by a stop-cock or aseries thereof. A scraper, Y, shown in fig. 5, may be'arranged upon the top of each horizontal series of pipes L, havinga long rod or handle projecting from the front, to enable one to remove the soot and ashes acou'mw lating upon said pipes by drawing said scrapers backward and forward on the pipes; but the more effectual mode of cleaning them is by means of a hose showering them through the openings B and O, bCfOXQHlOlllllOllOd, which are designed for that purpose. Between the pipes F, forming the bottom of the fire-hox, are arranged a series of movable bai-s, R, resting at each end upon the rodsT S, the one'markcd S, under the rear ends of said bars, being stationary, and the one at the front-,1, having a rocking motion in suitahlcbearings, which motion may he imparted thereto by means of a handle thereupon, marked U. There is a notch, 1', under the front ends of said bars R, in which a. projection or rib, 15, upon the shaft T, lies, as shown in fig. 2. The rear ends of the said bars are sloped, as indicated in fig. 2, so that when the said bars are moved longitudinally back by the rotation of the shaft T and the projection t,-the rear end of said bars will he'also raised up, the front ends being raised by the direct operation of the projection twhile giving it the backward longitudinal movement aforesaid. Thus, by giving the shaft T a rocking motion, the said movable bars R are moved backward and upward, and forward and downward, so as thoroughly to shake down the ashes from the grate as desired. The effect of the said vibratory movement of the bars R will be onhancodby constructing said bars with notches, marked ain the drawings, upon their top, but they may be used without said notches if desired; and said bars may also be supported andoperated in any suitable manner, so that they effect the desired result.
Having described the construction and operation oi' iny invention, I will proceed to specify what I claim,
' and desire to secure by Letters Patent. I
1. I claim the arrangement of movable bars R in combination with stationary water grate-bars, substantially as and for the purposes specified. I
2. I claim the combination and arrangement of the vertical headers G and the horizontal pipes L, snbstantially as specified and shown. I
3. I claim the combination of the water grate-hars F with said headers G and pipes L, arranged-and operating substantially as specifiedfand for the purposesdescribed.
4. I claim the arrangement of the pipe or pipes'K with the pipes J and headersl I, substantially as and, for the purposes specified.
. 5. I claim the arrangement of the heads M, when constructed so as to form a water-drip for condensed steam, as set forth and described. t L
6. I claim the arrangement of the pipes N with the receiver 0, so as to form a drip for the condensed steam in said receiver, and in combination with the pipe P, substantially as andfor the purposes specified. i
'7. I- claim the combination of the three systems of pipes F, J, and L, when connected and arranged in the manner herein set forth and shown, and for the uses specified.
8. I claim the arrangement of aseries of scrapers, Y. in combination with a series of horizontal pipes, L, as and for the purposes specified and shown,
. B. '1. CRANE.
