GEORGE WALTER LOVEJOY, OF TEI-IACIIAPI, CALIFORNIA.
WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 674,925, dated May 28, 1901. Application filed February 5,1901. Serial No. 46,145. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WALTER LOVE- JOY, acitizen of the United States, residing at- Tehachapi, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented a new and useful Wheel with Box and Axle in Combination, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is an elevation of wheel with box and axle in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of wheel, showing the working parts of box and axle.
The box is closed at one end, is dirt-proof, and carries oil for oiling axle. I obtain these results by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which when box and flange are in place they make a wheel inclosed with flush ends. On one end of A in center is hole F to correspond with hole F in the closed end of box D for oiling axle E. On the other end of A near center is a recess C. The flange of box D is bolted to wheel A at C. The inside end of box D is held in projection 0 on the inside of A. Plug S passes through hole F on wheel A and screws in F in end of box D. This keeps oil from running out of box D.
In box D is recess I, in which runs collar K, fast on axle E. Collar K is held in box D by flange L, bolted to wheel A in recess C through holes in flange of box D.
The outer end of axle E passes through flange L. The bearing of axle E is larger than the outer end where it passes through flange L.
A soft washer M is placed between flange L'and flange on box D. Washer M forms a chamber in box D, which carries oil when D and L are fast on A.
On the outside of flange L is projection H to keep dirt from falling on axle E.
WVhat I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pulley comprising end pieces, one of which has an inward projection and the other recessed on its outer side; an axle-box having its front end supported by said projection and a flange fitting in the aforesaid recess; means to retain the flange in the recess and means whereby lubricant may be permitted insertion in the box substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE WALTER LOVEJOY.
