BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,832, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed January '7, 1901. Serial No. 42,378. (No model.:
To (IJ/Z whom, it may concern; an inclination with respect to the axis of the Beitknown that I, RUDOLF BERG,aeitizen wheel preferably tangential to au interior 55 of the United States, residingin Pittsburg, in circle which is drawn coneentrieally with the the county of Allegheny, in the State of Pennhub of the air-forcing wheel A, as shown in Sylvania, haveinvented certain new and usedotted lines in Figs. l and 4-. The inclined ful Improvements in Blowers, of which the air-forcing slots are arranged equidis'tantly following is a specification. from each other and of equal width and 6o This invention has reference to an improved length. The air-forcing wheel A is surrounded blower for supplying large quantities of airby an exterior casing D, which is closed at 1o under pressure for usein the arts, said blower the sides by heads F, that are provided with being constructed either with a single or with central bearings G for the shaft I, said beara plurality of easily running air forcing ings being concentrically adjusted by means 65 wheels in such manner that when their aeof screws H, so as to properly center the Lion is reversed the apparatus can be used as shaft. The heads F are provided with aira circulating-pump for lifting or mixing liqinlet openings f, which are adjacent to the uids; and the invention consists of an aircenter bearings G and which communicate blowerwhichcomprisesan exteriorstationary with the spaces E, that are formed in the 7o casing, heads for the same provided with airinterior of the easing between the web C inlet openings, an interior air-foreing wheel and the heads F of the same. One end of the shaft is provided with a lon- The invention consists, further, of a blower gitudinal keyway for being coupled with the having a plurality of air-forcing wheels; and shaft of a dynamo-electric machine or other the invention consists, lastly, in the construcmotor, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5. tiple or compound blower by enlarging the exterior casing D and arranging two or more air-forcing wheels A A2 A3 within the casing, as shown in Fig. 3. The sides of the casing D are closed by heads F, similar to those used in the single-acting blower. (Shown in Fig. 2.) It is preferable to use an uneven number of blowers, three being shown, the intermediate one, A3, being provided with inclined slots B3 at both sides of its w'eb, while the outer air-forcing wheels A' A3 are provided with inclined slots B B3 at the outer portion of the webs, which slots are, however, equal in size to the inclined slots at both sides of the web of the intermediate air-forcing wheel. In this case the air passes through the openings fin the heads F into the spaces E and E4 of the outer air-forcing wheels A A3 and then through the inclined slots in the outer circumference of the said Wheels into the spaces E3 between the outer and intermediate wheels, the casing being provided with annular spaces E2 and E5 and an intermediate annular'space E6, that extend around the outer wheels A A3 and the intermediate or central wheel A2. The air is forced from the spaces E? through the inclined slots B3 of the center wheel into the annular chamber E6 and from the same through the outlet-opening L to the conducting-pipe connected with the place 0f use, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3.
A compound blower having three wheels may be called a double compound blower, while a blower having four or live wheels can be termed a triple'compound blower, and one with six or sevenwheels a quadruple blower, zc. In all cases, however, the hub of the air-forcing wheels has to be secured to the shaft I by means of nuts and jam-nuts M, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. By the compound blowers a higher pressure can be obtained, while the easy running of the same with considerable less power is obtained than with the centrifugal or other blowers hereto- The wheel A can also be used for a circulating-pump, in which the action is reversed-7l. e., in place of forcing air a suitable liquid is raised or mixed with another liquid. Such a circulating-pump is shown in Figs. 4 and 5, in which the location of the slotted forcing-wheel produces the raising of theliquid through the stand-pipe Ninto a semicircular chamber E at the upper part of the casing and then through the chamber EX and through the inclined slots of the rotary wheel A to the annular channel E of the same to the outlet-pipe L. A drain-pipe P and cock Q are arranged at the lower part of the exterior casing D for properly draining the casing D when the connection with the outletpipe is interrupted. The heads F are in this case also provided with hub-shaped bearings G, as shown in Fig. 5. The air-forcing wheel is of exactly the same construction as in the air-blower, the inclination of the slots in the circumference of the same beingindicated in dotted lines, and arranged tangential to a circle drawn concentric with the forcing-wheel at the inside of the same, as shown in Fig. 4. The suction or inlet stand-pipe N can be connected with different supply-pipes whenever the lifting and mixing of different liquids is required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An air-blower, consisting of an exterior annular casing provided with an outlet-opening, heads at the opposite sides of the casing provided with inlet-openings, and an interior rotary air-forcing wheel provided with a central web, and a circumferential fiange having slots at both sides of said web, said slots having a suitable inclination to the axis of the wheel, .substantially as set forth.
2. In an air-blower, consisting of an exterior casing, provided with inwardly projecting flanges and an outlet-opening, heads attached to opposite sides of said casing and provided with inlet-openings, and an interior rotary air-forcing Wheel provided with a web and a circumferential flange adjacent to the flanges of the casing and with slots having an inclination to the axis of the wheel, and central bearings in the heads for supporting the shaft of the air-forcing wheel, substantially as set forth.
3. An air-blower, consisting of an exterior casing having an outlet-opening and a plurality of interior annular channels, heads applied to opposite sides of said casing, and provided with inlet-openings, and a plurality of air-forcing wheels provided each with a circum ferential flange having slots arranged at a suitable inclination to the axis of said wheels, substantially set forth.
4. An air-blower, consisting of an exterior casing provided with an outlet-opening and a plurality of annular channels in the same,
heads attached to opposite sides of said casing and provided with inlet-openings, ashaft supported in central bearings of the heads, and a plurality of air-forcing wheels on said shaft, the intermediate air-forcing wheel being provided with slots at both sides of its web, while the outer air-forcing wheels are provided with slots at the outer sides of the IOO IIO
