To @ZZ whom t www] concern: housing k130, open at its front to expose a Be itknown that I, ALLEN DEVILBISS, Jr., table 30, which` is marked on its face with acitizen of the UnitedStates, andaresidentof yseveral rows of price-totals and near its up-. Toledo, Lucas county, State of Ohio, have inper edge with two rows of weight-totals 140 vented certain new anduseful Improvements and 14, the latter being colored differently 55 l in Scales, (Case W and my preferred man-v from the former, as indicated in shaded lines nerof carrying out the invention is set forth on the drawings.

' ment does not throw the pendulum out ofits and in the present instance there is provided true perpendicular'position. an additional weight 90,colored to correspond 75 The present invention is an improvement with the other row of weight-totals and adaptoverv my previous patents in this line, and ed to be placed upon the pendulum above the embodies practically the same essential feafixed `weight 9. This hand and pendulum tures of construction, to which are added in stand on lines at slight angles to each other 3o this case certain details of construction eX- and projecting from the active edge of the 8o plain'ed at lengthbelow and set forth in the knife-'bearingsl 7, and when vthe pendulum claims appended, the whole bein g constructed stands perpendicular the hand stands at zero as hereinafter described and as illustrated in on the table 30. ll is a link connecting the the accompanying drawings, whereinscale-beam with a point 10 on the` disk above 3,5v Figure l is a sectional view through one the main pivot 7. The parts are so arranged type of my scale, showing the hand as moved that when the load is placed on the platform to four pounds. The row 14 gives tion of all of said parts assembled, excepting the total weight, the figures on the hand are the hand and its disk. the price per pound, and the figure in the lis the maiuscale-beam, fulcrumed at 2 on table which is exposed throughthe notch 92 45 a support which rises from the base, and 3 is opposite the price per pound is the total 95 1' a pan or platform having a standard 4f pivotprice. When the light weight 90 is added to y ally supported, as at upon said beam. I reserve the right, however, to employ the `mechanism herein described on'other types of scales.
In assembling the parts of a scale of this 'type it has been found to be extremely difficult to counterbalance the weight of the hand and to counterbalance the weight ofthe link, because the adjustment of the cou'nterbalance of one of these parte: destroys the accu'- racy of the counterbalance" of the other. e Hence experience has proved it advisabley to adjust these counterbalances separately, as described below. Furthermore, 'after' the scale is set up ready for'use and with the.
hand standing accurately on the zero-line when the pendulum is perpendicular ity is often found on testing the scale that the hand does not accuratelyl register with all the inedge ofthemain pivot 7.
Vention consists in details of construction' dicating-lines onth'e table. Thisis due to the fact that the extremes ofv movement of the link-pivot arejnot-in` proper relation tor a horizontal line drawnthrough the active The' present indescribed Abelow in connection with a scale of the type illustrated herein 'and set "forth, 4vabove,r wherebythe difficulties just menl tioned can be 'overcome quickly, easily, ac` ourately, and permanently at the time 'fthe parts are assembled.v

Athelink-carrier at opposite sides of the point Inassembling the parts above described' 'the disksare 'connected by vmeans of the vscrews v966 and 967fand 'theconne'cted pendulum and hand areinsertedvin the casing, afterv which the nuts 12 and le20'are adjusted until the hand is counterbalanced so that lit stands accuratelykover the zero-line when the pendulum hangs vertical, whetherthe removable weight'90 visused or` not. The parts are then removed from the casing,.the-disk 960 disconnected from the disk 96, the link-carrier inserted, the disk 960 reattached, and the parts again'insertedin the casing. The link 11 is then lmade vto connect the link-pivot 10*v with the scale-beamA 1, after which the nut'18 is' adjusted on the screw'l7 to counterbalance the'klink-pivot and link, and this adjustment is continued. untilfthe hand againy stands Vac.

tion to which the hand moves. If the-move` vand such test isveffected by placing a known*v i Yweight on the platform and'noting thepovsiment is excessive, it indicates that` the path of the link-pivot is too high relative tothe main pivot, and if themovement of the'hand is not sufficient it indicates that the pathV of the link-pivot" is too low. To correct either ofv these inaccuracies, oneof the screws'970 and 971 is loosened, while the other is tightened, which operation obviously rocks the link-carrier slightly over the hub, andhence changes the relative position of the active edges of' the link-pivot and the main pivot,.

It is obvious that considerable change in and this can readily be done without'destro'ying vthe counterbalance of the handA or the I Y the details of construction may be made with-v out departing from the essential principle of my invention. The presentspecic'ation and drawings describe and illustrate' only the manner I prefer atl-.this time for carrying outv the Ageneral idea. It is clear that thevarious I' weights could be applied to and adjustablyy rigid and the adjustabilityl of `the other would probably sullce,4 'the link-carrier could bef rockedioradju'stedaround the hub by other mechanism, one ofthe disks might rpossibly 'held' on their'` supports in many 'different. Ways, either theweight 12 or. 120v mightv be' "ige 1 be entirely omitted and all the other parts carried by the remaining disk-the hand is as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2-and many other changes in the construction of parts and additions to the entire machine could be adopted without detriment to the whole.
