To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EDWARD SCHLIE- PER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, ands);- act description thereof, reference being. had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 indicates an elevation, partly in section, of my improved feed-water heater. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the pan-supporting plate. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the upper portion of the heater. Fig. 5 is a plan view on line a: :1; of Figs. 1 and 4:. Fig. 6 isa plan view of a modified form of the water distributing or spraying device. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of one of the troughs on line 2 z of Fig. 5. Fig. 9 is a section on line A B of Fig. 6. Fig. 10 is a horizontal section on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 11 is a side elevation of strainer. My invention relates to feed-water heaters, and specifically to the construction and arrangement of the water distributing or spraying device, the manner of supporting the pans in said heater, and other novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, in which like reference characters indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A is a feed-water heater having an opening 1 for the admission of exhaust-steam and an opening 2 for the admission of Water thereto. The said heater is connected with an auxiliary chamber B, which is located between the heater and the pump. Water is admitted to the heater through the pipe 2, the lower end of which is connected to the annular waterchamber 4, which is integral with radial troughs 5 5 and which with said troughs form The said column or pipe 8, which is slotted or perforated in the sides to permit the free escape of steam. The said pans 7 7 are, as shown in the drawings, dish-shaped in form, the center or horizontal portion being seated between the bottom of the upper thimble and the top of the next succeeding thimble, as shown in the drawings, a washer or supporting-plate 9 being interposed to form a bearing for said pans, whereby each of the pans may be independently rotated, if necessary, when cleaning the same. Said pans 7 7 are provided with an annular lip or ridge 10 around the outer edge of the same and every alternate pan with an opening 11 near the center of the same, the pans so provided with an opening having an annular lip 12 extendingtherearound and projecting downwardly. Spiders or brackets 13 and let are arranged in the upper portion of said heater, the said thimbles 6 6 being connected to said spider 14 by means or the central column 8, as shown in the drawings, the upper one of said pans being supported not only between the two upper thimbles, but beingalso secured to said spider 18 by means of bolts 15. The said troughs 5 5 are V-shaped in cross-section, the top thereof being seated thereon in such manner that long narrow slits 16 are formed for the purpose of enabling the water which is admitted thereto to overflow andfall in sheets upon the upper pan, thence through the central opening therein to the next succeeding pan, and thence overflowing onto the next succeeding pan.
17 is a device for straining the surface of the Water of impurities. It is horseshoe-shaped in plan view, as shown in the drawings, and terminates in a pipe 18, that communicates with the exterior of the heater. The said straining device is supported upon rods 19, which are secured to the spider 13.
The auxiliary chamber B is connected to the heater by means of the pipe 20 and to a pump (not shown) by means of the pipe 21, the said pipe being of less cross-sectional area than pipe 20 and entering said auxiliary chamber B on a higher horizontal plane than pipe 20 for the purpose of discharging to the boiler water practically free of sediment or dirt. The said auxiliary chamber B is connected to the steam-spaces of the heater by means of the pipe'22.
A blow-oft 23 is arranged in the bottom of the heater.
The spraying device is secured, as heretofore stated, to the pipe 2 in an adjustable manner by means of the set-screw 24, the lower end of said pipe being screw-threaded and adapted to engage in a correspondinglythreaded socket formed in the top of said spraying device, so that the said spraying device may be adjusted in such wise that it can be removed from the top of the upper thimble, if desired, or adjusted in any position.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a feed-water heater, the combination with a shell or casing, of a hollow steam-receiving column having outlets for the steam located at intervals of its height, water-receiving pans located one above the other in separated arrangement on said column and arranged for the discharge of the steam between them from the outlets, the alternate pans being provided with drip-openings for the water to drip onto the pan below and the intermediate pans being shorter than the pans having the drip-openings and adapted for overflow at their edges only, an inletfor delivering the Water onto the upper pan of the series, a water-outlet, and a steam inlet and outlet.
2. In a feed-water heater, the combination with a shell or casing, of a hollow column having steam-outlets in its sides, thimbles arranged one above the other in separate arrangement on the said column and having openings in their sides to permit the escape of the steam, water-receiving pans held in separated arrangement, one above the other, by the thimbles, a'water inletand outlet, and a steam inlet and outlet.
8. In a feed-water heater, the combination with .a shell or casing, of aseries of thimbles arranged in superposed relation to each other, plates or washers interposed between the meeting ends of the thimbles, water-receiving pans having their inner edges clamped between the thimbles and the washers, whereby said pans are rendered capable of turning independent of each other, a water inlet and outlet and a steam inlet and outlet.
4. In a feed-water heater, a spraying device comprising an inlet-pipe, a hollow hub or body connected thereto and receiving the water therefrom, and troughs radiating from said hub or body which are provided with a narrow slot or opening extending longitudinally of themselves for the discharge of the water.
5. In a feed-water heater, a spraying device comprising an inlet-pipe, a hollow hub or body connected thereto and receiving the water therefrom, troughs radiating from the hub and having independent cap plates or tops which define in connection with the upper edge of the troughs, narrow longitudinally-extending slots for the discharge of the water.
6. In a feed-water heater, the combination with a shell or casing of a central column or support, independent thimbles surrounding the support and located one above the other and arranged for the free passage of the steam through them, water-receiving pans located one above the other in separated arrangement and held between the ends of the thimbles, a water-spraying device located above the upper pan of the series and adjustably and removably secured to its feed-water pipe, a water inlet and outlet, and a steam inlet and outlet.
