JOHN STOWELL, 0F OHARLESTQWN MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 67,460, dated 1119a 6:136?
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-BOOKS.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, JOHN .STOWELL, of Charlestown, ilrthe county of Middlesex, and State of Manchu". setts, have invented a new and usefulafety-Cockj and do'hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, andrepresented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and
Figure 2 a. vertical section of'it.
My invention is designed to be applied to a water conduit, constituting a part of an apparatus for discharging. water into a building or an apartment for the purpose of extinguishing a. fire when occurring therein. It mey also be applied to advantsge'on a gas conduit or pipe, and for closing the same in case of conflagration taking place in the building containing suchpipe.
In the drawings, A denotes the body of the cock, it being tubular or hollow, and containing a valve-seat, a, and a valve, B, arranged as represented. "-A'branch pipe or oduction -pnssege, b, leads laterally outot' the body. The valve-stem 0 slides freely in the upper end, or part d, of the body A, and has a. female screw, a, form efl on its.upper end, and to receive a corresponding inule screw,f, of an sluxil-iery stem, C. Theupper end of the said stem 0 rests against the lower surface of a. plug, D, of fusible metal, (that is, a metal that melts at a very low temperature) held within a socket, g, formed ins. yoke or open standard, E, erected on the body A, 1L5 represented,
By means of the auxiliary stem 0 acting against the plugthe vnlyh may be forced closely down upon its seat, so as to shut off the iowuge-otf any water through the cock wheh the latter is in use. In case of afire taking place in the building containing the cock, and the fusible metal being melted by the heat of such fire, the valve will be set free, so as to be forcetl fbfi' its seat by the pressure of the water in the conduit, and this water will be suffered toflow through the 'cock, a.nd may be discharged on the fire for the purpose of extinguish ing it. v
The fusible plug and the auxiliary stem and its screw, or their equivalent, may be employed for keeping a. valve elevated ofi its seat in case of 'the application of the cock containing such valve to a. gas conduit, the some being'in order that, when the fusible plug may be melted by the best of e fire, the val!" may be caused. to full by gravity ore spring and close the cock, so that the egress of gssfrom the cohduit may be srrested.
I mske no claim to the employment of a. fusible plug as ordinerily used with a steam-boiler, and for the purpose of indicating when the water thereof may be-toodow therein, but I claim the safety-cool:- made substsm tislly as described, viz, of the body A, the valve and its seat, the fusible plug, the'suxilisry stem and its screws, or the equivalents thereof, the whole being as and for the purpose specified JOHN STOWELL.
