I Be it known that I, JAMES DALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Oar-Brake, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to a car-brake which has been designed to be used as a supplemental brake for street-cars and which is so arranged as to be especially adapted for use as an emergency-brake.
The especial object of this invention is to provide astrong, simple, powerful, and inexpensive car-brake which will take up comparatively little room on the car-axles, so that the same may be applied to cars without interfering with the other connections required to be made to the axle.
To these ends this invention consists of the car-brake and of the combinations of parts therein, as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partially broken away, of a car provided with brakes constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of the car-brake, and Fig. 3 is a sec- I tional view of a combined car wheel and brake-disk.
' In nearly all electric-car constructions the motor and the connections from the motor to the car-axles necessarily occupy considerable space, and as the locations of these connections vary in different makes of electric cars I have found in practice that it is a comparatively difficult matter to obtain the necessary room for applying a supplemental or emergency brake to an electric car. To overcome this difficulty, Icontemplate employing an arrangement of tandem strap brakes which are arranged in line with each other, one directly behind the other, and which may be operated to close in the same direction, so that a single direct link or rod may be used to connect the operating handle with the brakes, and in order that a brake of this kind may be applied to cars without diificulty I propose to provide the car-wheels with brakedisks which are carried by and preferably formed integrally therewith, so that an emergency-brake constructed according to my in vention will occupy comparatively little space on the car-axles and can be applied to nearly all of the standard electric cars without removing or altering any of. the other parts thereof.
Referring the the accompanying drawings and in detail, A designates the car-axles, having wheels B secured thereon in the ordinary manner. Carried by and preferably formed integrally with the wheels B are brake-disks 10. Engaging the brake-disks 10 and arranged in line with one another are spring brake-straps 11. The front ends of the brakestraps 11 are secured to fixed points or brackets 12, and the free ends of the brake-straps are connected together by a link or rod 13, having a turnbuckle let connecting the parts thereof. By tightening or adj usting the turnbuckle 14 the brakes may be said to operate simultaneously. Connected to the front end of the rod or link 13 bya swivel or joint which will permit of a lateral motion to compensate for the motion of the car-truck with respect to the car-body is a link 18, having a turnbuckle 19 connecting the parts thereof. The link 18 is connected to the lower end of an operating-lever 15, which may be held in its set or operative position bya catch 16, engaging notches or teeth in a sector 17. By means of this construction the car-wheels at one side of the car may be braked or controlled from one car-platform and the car-wheels at the opposite side of the car may be controlled from the other carplatform. In the present instance I have shown my brake applied to but two of the car-wheels on each side. It is obvious, however,- that more than two carwheels may be controlled by each brake,.if desired.
I am aware that numerous other changes may be made in practicing my invention by those who are skilled in the art without departing from the scope of said invention as eX- pressed in the claim. I do not wish, therefore, to be limited to the construction which I have herein shown and described; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of car-axles, car-wheels secured thereon, a brake mechanism for controlling the car-wheels at one side of the car from one platform thereof, a brake mechanism for controlling the wheels at the other side thereof, from the other car-platform,each of said brake mechanisms comprising brakedisks carried by the car-Wheels, a brake-strap passing around each brake-disk, and having its forward end secured in fixed position, an adjustable link connecting the free ends of the brake-straps, an operating lever and an operating-rod connected to the forward end of the link, with a connection permitting a 5 lateral movement of the car-trucks independent 'of the car body, substantially as described.
