TROLLEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,589, dated May 21, 1901. Application filed November 10, 1900. Serial No. 36,067. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH TRIOKEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading,
in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention'relates to improvements in trolleys for electric-railway cars employing overhead electric conductors; and the object is to provide a trolley by the use of which the electric current will not be broken by reason of the trolley-wheel becoming disengaged while the car carrying it is turning a curve and which at the same time will be comparatively simple in construction, easily repaired, and cheaply replaced when worn out.
The invention is fully described in the following specificationand clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View, partly in section, of my invention. Fig. 2 is across-sectional view on line a; x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof. Fig. I is a detail of the springbox, and Fig. 5 a detail of the contact-washer.
The harp A is in one piece and has the usual jaw shape, formed by two arms a. In the inside of either of these arms is loosely arranged a spring-box I), having depending legs I) and backed by a coiled spring 0, resting on a flange a in the arm at. These boxes are approximately cup-shaped, the open ends facing the trolley-wheel cl, and the spindle e on which the wheel 01 is mounted passes through these boxes and is held in position by means of a cotter-pin c, which passes through openings a in the arms a, through the boxes I), and through a hole in the spindle e. The spindle e is wholly within the harp, its ends terminating in the boxes 1), allowing it to move in the harp free of the arms a. A coiled spring 't' is located in each box 1), surrounding the spindle e and bearing against the washer g. This washer is located between the hub of the wheel cl and the face of the box I) and is formed with a collar 9 and a lip g which lip is adapted to enter the space be-' tween the legs I) of the box and thus prevent its rotation. I
The lower endA of the harp is formed with the usual loop for securing the rope and is split nearly its whole length, as at Z, and is formed with two lugs m.
The rod B, which represents the trolleypole, enters the end of the harp, and holes are drilled therein, passing partly through the rod B, and when the rivets n are placed in position in said holes they will securely hold the harp on the pole against turning and draw together the split end of the harp.
It will be seen that by means of my construction the trolley-wheel will be permitted a certain movement from side to side, as well as a limited turning movement in the harp, due to its hanging in the loosely-mounted spring-backed boxes, and this movement will be sufficient to allow it to adapt itself to the line of, the conductor at such times as, were it rigid, it would become disengaged therefrom-as,for instance,while turning a corner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is v A trolley for electric cars comprising a single-piece harp A split at its lower end and adapted to be secured permanantly to the pole and carrying spring-boxes b in each of its arms a, said boxes backed by coiled spring a resting on flanges a in the arm a, coiled springs 'i located inside said boxes surrounding the trolley-carrying spindle 6 adapted to bear against non-revolving washers 9 formed with a lip 9 located between said boxes and the trolley-wheel hub, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
