KALM GRIFFITH RIOKARDS,
PATENT .1- EEICE.-
OF MOORE FIELD, NEBRASKA.
ELEVATING-TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentrNo. 674,471, dated May 21, 1901.
Application lecl February 2, 1900. Serial No. 3.686- lNO mOdel-J` T0 rtZZ whom, t may colwerm,
Be it known that I, KALM GRIFFITH RICK- ARDS, residing at Moorefield, in the county of Frontier and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Elevating- Trucks; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in portable elevators.
The object of my invention is to provide an elevator light and portable enough so that the same may be convenient-ly shoved from place to place, and is adapted to be used in loading barrels, bags, and other packages upon wagons.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 an end elevation of a portable elevator embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
As has been stated, the aim of my invention is more particularly to provide an elevator that shall be light and portable enough so as to be readily moved from place to place and so constructed that bags and barrels which would be too heavy for one man to lift into a wagon can be rolled upon the platform of my elevator and carried on a level with the Wagon-bed and from thence rolled over into the wagon by one man. From this it will be seen that by means of my improved elevator one operator will be able to lift such loads as would require the assistance of two or three men were this appliance orasimilar one not used.
My invention embodies a platform 5, preferably upon casters 20, to which is hinged a pair of uprights 1, which above are united by the cross-beam 2, reinforced by the stays 4.
To maintain the framework in an upright position while the elevator is being used, I provide the braces 6, which are secured to the upright by means of the hand-screws c and to the platform 5 by means of the handscrews c', so that the elevator in being carried through doors or when not in use may be folded down to occupy the least amount of space. A further great advantage is that the platform, together with this framework, may be used as a truck, so that the bags,
platform 7 within the warehouse and then be pushed or dragged by means of this framework, operating like handles to a truck, to and adjacent to the wagon, where the frame Vis then thrown upright and secured, when the platform is unloaded. y
Secured within the upper end of the frame is an ordinary shaft S, provided with the drums 9 and 10, which shaft is provided at the ends with the sprocket 21, over which passes an ordinary chain 13, and secured to the drums or spools 9 and 10 are two ordinary cables 11 and 12, divided below, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the two ends ct ay may be suitably secured to the platform 7. This platform is of a suitable size and is provided upon the sides with the openings adapted to receive the pins and when these pins, which are really only necessary upon one side, are in position, the platform is practically held in a horizontal position between the framework. At suitable points one of these uprights is further provided with a number of openings 19', into which an ordinary pin 19 is inserted, so that the platform is solidly supported when resting upon this pin 19 Within one of the openings.
Secured to the lower portion of the frame is the crank-operated sprocket 15, provided with an integral ratchet acted upon by means of a pawl 14, so that the platform is further at pointsintermediate of the openings 19'. An ordinary chain 13 unites the upper sprocket 21 to this lower sprocket 15.
From this it will be noticed that/I have constructed a wheel-'supported portable elevatorcarriage provided with an operatingframe by means of which the carriage may be drawn or pushed, a platform Working between the framework, and mechanism to raise and lower the platform.
While the platform is to be held in a horizontal position, the pins e e are to be placed when the material is to be unloaded the pins are switched from this pair of openings into a pair farther from the upright, so that the boxes, or barrels may be loaded upon the A supported by means of this pawl and ratchet e e, there being a number of these openings,
IOO
within the innermost pair of openings; but
platform will be tilted at an angle. This tilting of the platform will enable the operator to readily slide off the boxes, barrels, or bags,
. and so materially aids in expediting the operation of unloading the elevator.
The device is noticable becausevof its extreme simplicity.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
In an. elevator of the Character described, a portable platform, two united uprights hinged to said platform, mechanism to lock said uprights in a vertical position, a shaftl
