GRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,246, dated May 14, 1901.
Application filed February 21, 1901. Serial No. 48,310. (No model.)
To ctllwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN L. MONTGOM- ERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Metz, in the county of Marion, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to oil-well pumps; and it has for its object to provide a grip for holding the pump-rod against slipping during the adjustment of the rod with respect to the walking-beam, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient construction which may be easily operated for the purpose designed.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing an oil-pump in operative position and provided with the present device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the grip removed from the pump. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the grip with the pump-rod in place.
Referring now to the drawings, 5 represents the barrel of an oilpump having a head 6 and discharge-pipe 7. In the pump-barrel is the usual pump -rod 8, which extends upwardly through the head thereof and which at its upper end is engaged with the grip 9 at the end of the walking-beam 10.
The upper end of the pump-head is interiorly threaded, as usual, to receive a stuffing-boX, and in the place of this usual stuffing-box is placed the present grip.
The grip consists of a cylindrical body 11, having reduced end portions 12 and 13, which are exteriorly threaded, the end portions of the enlarged central part of the body being preferably beveled, as shown. Formed centrally through the body is an annular passage 14, of a size to snugly receive the pump rod, and in the inner wall of the body and extending longitudinally thereof from the end 13 to a point adjacent to the end 12 is a crosssectionally rectangular passage or groove 15, in which is slidably disposed a gripping-block 16, this block having its bottom channeled, as shown at 17, to present two gripping- faces 18 and 19, which when the block is moved toward the center of the opening through the grip-body frictionally engage the pump-rod and hold it against movement through the opening of the body.
To move the gripping-block into and out of gripping position,said block has a T-shaped groove cut longitudinally thereof in its face opposite to the gripping-faces and extending from one end of theblock to a point adjacent to the other end of the block, and in this groove are engaged the heads 20 and 21 of two machine- screws 23 and 24,which are engaged with threaded perforations 25 and 26, which are formed through the body of the grip and communicating with the groove 15. The heads 20 and 21 are annular and are connected with the bodies of the screws by reduced necks, as shown, lying in the reduced portion of the groove of the grippipg-block.' The turning heads of the screws of course lie exterior of the body 11 for engagement of a wrench to rotate the screws,and when said screws are rotated in one direction they work inwardly to move the grippin g-block inwardly, and when the screws are reversely rotated they move the block into releasing position.
In assembling the parts of the grip the screws are first engaged with the body 11 and the block is then slid into the groove 15 to receive the annular heads of the screws in its groove.
