KIEL, GERMANY.
INSOLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 673,869, dated May 14, 1901.
Application filed July 27, 1898.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WVILHELM AUGUST HERMANN HAMPEL and ADOLF SCHNEIDER, subjects of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Kiel, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insertion Soles or Socks for Boots and Shoes, (for which we have applied for patents in England, dated June 17, 1898, No. 13,554; in Austria, dated June 18, 1898; in Hungary, dated June 18, 1898 No. 8,663, and in Switzerland, dated June 17, 1898, No. 18,680,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in insoles; and the object of the invention is to provide an insole elastic and easy to the foot and affording substantial support to the middle part of the same in particular; and for this purpose the invention consists of an insole comprising a sole portion of suitable material and a flat spring attached to said sole portion at its middle part, said spring extending longitudinally of the sole portion and being curved at its ends, respectively, away from the toe and heel of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of our improved insole. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our improved insole is composed of a sole portion of any suitable material, such as leather cut in the usual form of an insole, to the under side of which is attached,by means of rivets e or otherwise, the fiat spring d, of metal or othersuitable material. The spring is attached to the sole portion at the middle of the samet'. 6., between the toe and heeland is curved away from the sole portion at its ends, respectively, opposite the toe and heel. The sole portion is thus raised at its middle part beneath the foot above the level of the heel and toe, the spring affording substantial support through the sole portion to This valuable supthe middle of the foot.
Serial No. 686,999. (No model.)
port to the foot at the middle part of the same, below the instep, inilitates against the formation of a flat foot, renders walking easy for those already afflicted, and aids effectively in curing this deformity, which, as is well known, results from lack of sufficient support for the middle of the foot.
For facilitating evaporation of moisture from the foot and promoting ventilation and circulation of air in the boot or shoe the sole portion is preferably provided at its under side with chan nels b and with perforations at opening into said channels. The spring dis located in a longitudinal channel cat the under side of the sole portion.
Our improved insole affords needed support to the foot and is of special value in case of a fiat foot. When the foot is removed from the shoe, the spring raises the sole portion of the insole within the shoe not only at the heel, but also at the toe and throughout its entire length. This is a great advantage, as thereby the air is permitted to circulate when the shoe is not in use thoroughly around, through, and beneath the sole and through the perforations of the same, so that the same becomes thoroughly dry in a very short time, even in the toe of the shoe.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An insole, consisting of a sole portion provided with channels and perforations, and a strip of suitable material having spring tension, attached to the under side of said sole portion at its middle part and extending longitudinally from end to end of the same, said spring-strip being curved at its ends respectively away from the toe and heel of the sole portion, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
WILHELM AUGUST HERMANN HAMPEL. ADOLF SCHNEIDER.
