SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.'673,777, dated May 7, 1901.

In order to record the movements of the rudder, I attach on the steering-wheel spindle a toothed wheel engaging with a train of wheels. Above the chain-spindle I fix a frame carrying two or more reels and a drum over which a tape passes. Near the said drum I vmount a pointer providedwith a'pencil or other suitable marking device. The said may be done by means of a worm or screw rotated by the aforesaid train of wheels, so
- that as thesteering-wheelis turned the penoil marks on'the tape the exact action of the rudder.; I provide suitable vmeans for causing the'pencil-point to travel in either direction for indicating starboard or port steering.
' According to this invention in order to have a chronological record of the above movements of therudder I provide a timepiece. By means of this timepiece rotary motion is imparted to a wheel or wheels, disk or disks,

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg- 1. In a device of the character described,

In a device of the character described, the combination with the steering mechanism of a vessel; of tape-carryingrollers, mechanism for operating said rollers from the'movements of said steering mechanism a distance proportional to the distance moved by the steering mechanism, a drum, over which said tape is adapted to pass, gearing connected to said steering mechanism for receiving motion therefrom, and mechanism connected to said gearing adapted to record the movements of said steering mechanism upon said drum over which said tape passes, substantially as described.

In a device of the character described, the combination with the steering mechanism of a vessel; of tape-carrying rollers,.mechanism for operating said rollers from the movements of said steering mechanism a distance proportional to the distance moved, by the steering mechanism, a drum over which said tape is adapted to pass, gearingconnect'ed to said steering mechanism for receiving motion therefrom, mechanism connected to said gearing. adapted to record the movements of said steering mechanism upon said tape and mechanism for marking the time of such movements upon said tape, substantially as described.
