VICTOR BEAUFILS, oF PERIGUEUX, FRANCE.
PORTABLE BILLIARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent NO. 673,693, dfled May 7, 1901.
Application filed August 19, 1898. Serial No. 689,042. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, VICTOR BEAUFILS, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Prigueux, (Dordogne,) France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Billiards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has for its object to provide a conveniently-handled cue for billiard playing. y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the cue with the stem projected. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cue with the stem projected, and Fig. 3' is a sectional View of the cue with the stem in position to be projected. v
R is the button attached to a spring S, suitably fastened to the outside of the cue-handle.
M is the stem, having at the outer end a leather tip, suitably fastened, and in the rear part a guide-slot U.
N' is a collar fastened on the stem M at such a point that when the stem is pushed into the cue the collar shall come under the button R.
N is a bolt or latch having a helical spring O on its shank and set in a recess of the collar.
T is a guide-pin in the cue and passing through the slot Uto prevent the stem from rotating, thus bringing the bolt N always under the button R.
P and Q are helical springs of unequal strength acting on the stem.
The stem being forced into the cue until vthe spring-bolt N latches with a shoulder on the handle under the button R, the user aims the cue and the button is pressed with finger or thumb of the hand holding the cue. The bolt N being thus unlatched from the handle the stronger spring Q on the stein pushes the stem outward. To prevent a sudden jarring of the cue and a-displacing of the point of the stem by a sudden shock of the collar against the end of the cue, the weaker spring P comes int'o play as a cushion and the stroke given on the ball therefore resembles that made by the cue when actuated by the hand.
I claim as my invention- A mechanical spring-cue consisting of a handle and sliding stem with two springs of different strength, a strong spring to force the stem out when released and a weaker one to act as a cushion, and a latching device comprising a spring-actuated bolt carried by the stem and adapted to engage the handle and a spring-supporting device on the handle adapted to engage the said bolt in order to release the same from its engagement with the handle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VICTOR BEAUFILS.
Witnesses BALLANO, EDWARD MICHEL.
