and which cannot be broken by ordinary" usage.
As these covers have been hitherto constructed they have been hinged at one side to the edge of the hole, and when with this construction a piece of coal or any solid obstruction got in between the edges of the cover and the hole, especially near the side to which the hinges were affixed, it acted as a fulcrum for the cover, which thus became a lever, so that any pressure thereon on the opposite side from that to which the hinges were secured served to force the hinges loose or break them. In myimproved construction-I dispense with the hinges and substitute therefor a mechanism that operates as readily and as easily as hinges and which cannot be broken or detached by ordinary usage.
My invention further comprises a counterweight construction which assists in raising the cover from its horizontal or closed position to a vertical or open position.
My invention further consists in a structure which embodies a combination of both of the above-mentioned features.
Referring now to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved cover Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof on the line A A of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a similar view of a different design of a cover, which is raised above the surrounding surface.
The walls of the hole may be formed in any desired manner, as by the metallic rectangular plates at, which in Fig. 2 are shown as secured by rivets a to and supported by the angle-bars b, extending around said lining and resting upon the concrete or other material in which the hole is formed. Back of the side of the hole to which the cover (1 is secured is,formed a recess 6, preferably rectangular, into which the bent arms f project through suitable apertures 0, formed in the plate a and portion of the angle-bar b consti tuting the adjacent wall of the'hole. These arms are pivotally secured at theirinner ends to the cover 61 near one side, preferably by being pivoted to the side of the U-shaped angle-piece g, rigidly secured to or formed integrally with the under side of the cover (1.
The pivots are conveniently formed by a rod h, extending between the armsfand through the ends of the piece g. The armsfextend downwardly and rearwardly into the recess (2 and preferably have their outer endscur-ved upward, as shown, to form asubstantially U- shaped bend. To prevent the cover from being detached by withdrawing the arrnsffrom the recess e, I secure thereto a rod f, extending between and passing through the apertures formed in the outer ends of the arms.
The operation of the device will be apparent. As the cover (1 is raised from above or below it turns upon its edge, the armsf be ing withdrawn from the recess 6 so far as may be necessary to permit of the movement, and finally assumes the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, where the cover is turned back through an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees. As the cover is closed the movement of the parts is reversed.
In connection with the structure so far described I preferablyem ploy the counterweight construction shown, in which a heavy weight j, preferably cylindrical, is secured to the outer ends of the arms f, preferably by means of the links 70, pivoted to said endsby the rod f and preferably to the weightj in any suitable manner, as by means of the rod Z, passing through the lower ends of said links and the weightj and secured in place in any desired manner, as by the head on one end and the nut on the other. With this construction it will be apparent that as the cover is raised from its horizontal to its vertical position, either in opening or closing, this counterweight will aid the movement of the cover and oppose its movement in the opposite direction, thus-increasing the ease with which sider best adapted to carry out its purposes,
it will be understood that it is capable of modifications and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the following claims except as may be necessitated by the state of the prior art.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a device of the class descljibed, the combination with the cover d, of the plate a, forming the side of the aperture upon which the cover turns, the bent armsfpivotally secu red to the cover and extendi ngrthrough said plate a, and means for preventing the complete withd rawal of the armsffrom the plate a.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cover d, of the plate Ct, the bent arms fpivotally secured to the cover and extending through said plate a and means for preventing the complete withdrawal of the armsffrom the plate 0, consisting of a member extending between said arms.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cover d, of the plate a, the bent arms f pivotallysecured to the cover and extending through said plate a, and the cylindrical counterweightj suspended from the ends of the armsf by the links it.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination with the cover (1, of the plate a, the bent armf pivotally secured to the cover and extending through said plate a, and the counterweightj secured thereto so as to assist in raising the cover from its horizontal to its vertical position. I
5. In a device of the class described, .the combination with the cover (I, of the bent armsf pivoted thereto, and the counterweight pivotally secured to said arms, the pivotal connections between the elements being such as to permit of the angular relation between and the counterweight beingchanged.
6. In a device of the class described, the
combination with the cover (I, of the arms f pivoted thereto, and the counterweight pivotally secured to said arms by means of the links 70.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a frame surrounding an aperture, with a cover for said aperture, and connections between one side of said frame and said cover for preventing the removal of said cover Whilefreely permitting its opening and closing, said connections being entirely beneath the cover when it is closed so that the cover may be 1na$ flush with the surface in which it is set. i
