COLLAR OR CUFF BUTTON.

To all whom itmay concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE BENNISON GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwich, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar or Cufi Buttons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to collar and cuff buttons. I

The object of the invention is to provide a button of this character which shall be of simple construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and which when in place will not become accidentally disconnected.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken from a different position, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing a shank of the button bent in the form of a hook.

In the drawings, 0. denotes the shoe, and b the shank, of the button. The shank may be provided with a head or may. be bent into the form of a hook. The shoe and shank are represented as composed of a single piece of flat wire or sheet metal bent into form. The shoe consists of two parts 1 and 2, the latter being the lower part and is made preferably, but not necessarily,in the form of a loop or ring and the former being the upper part and is made preferably, but not necessarily, in the form of a half loop or ring, which is spaced from the lower part and has its ends brought together and soldered or otherwise connected to form the shank, which, as before stated, may terminate in a hook or be provided with a head, as may .be desired.

The button may be connected with the buttonhole in two ways-first, in the usual way of common buttons by inserting the head in a buttonhole on the inside of the collar-band and drawing it through the hole. The shank is now given a one-half turn, which will leave the lower section of the base on the inside of the band and the upper section on the outside, the Walls of the buttonhole being be tween the two and the button held so that it cannot drop or push out.

The second way to operate the button is to place the base-ring-that part of the ring not overlapped by the half-ringin a buttonhole from the outside, press firmly, and turn half around, as before stated, and the result is the same. To facilitate the operation of tn rning half around, the shank is provided with a rounding curve 0 at the point of turning up from the half-ring, and on the opposite side the base-ring is provided with a bend or depression d for the better adjustment; to the buttonhole. The two ends of the shank may be fastened together in any suitable manner and a head attached, as may be desired, or the shank may be lengthened or turned up to form a book, so that when the button is used back of the collar it will also serve to keep the necktie in position.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.

While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it distinctly understood that I contemplate within the scope of my invention any construction of button which may be read into the appended claim.

Having thus described and ascertained the nature of the said invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The shoe and shank of a button, formed of a single piece, the shoe being composed of a complete loop or ring, an overlying half loop or ring, spaced from the complete loop or ring, and the shank being formed with a round curve at the point where it is turned up from the half loop or ring, the complete loop or ring being provided with a bend or depression at a point opposite to the rounding curve, substantially as specified.
