SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,518, dated April 23, 1901.

Figure I is a perspective showing the box closed and looking at the rear end thereof. Fig. Il is a -perspective showing the box open and looking at the forward end. Fig. III is Fig. IV is adetail vertical section taken on line IV IV, Fig. II.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the oblong bodyor bottom section of the box, preferably rectangular in shape, and 2 a hooded top section adapted to telescope over the upper edges of the bottom section. The top section 2 is somewhat longer than the bottom section 1 and is pivoted thereto at 3 near the rear end. Thus when the box is opened 3o the bottom section remains stationary, While the top section is tilted, as shown in Fig. II, opening the box at its forward end, with the rear end of thetop section telescoping down g over the rear end of the bottom section. Each 3 5 end of the top section is provided with overhanging lips 4 5, which are adapted to prevent moisture from 'finding its way into the box.
6 represents a ledge on the forward end of 4o the bottom section, against which the end plate 7 of the top section restswhen the box is closed.
8 represents a removable plate, preferably secured by bolts 9, said plate having a central aperture 10, behind which a glass I plate l1 and a name-card 12 may be inserted.
13 represents a slot on the under side of the overhangng top section at the rear end of the box, through which outgoing and incoming mail may be inserted. 5o
14 represents an end plate at the rear end of the top section, having a vertical boss 15, in which a recess may be formed to insert a staff 16 of a flag 17.
1S represents a chain by which the iagsta 55 may be secured to the box, the object of said flag when in position being to notify either the carrier or the owners of the box that there is mail-matter within the box. When there is no mail-matter within the box, the flag 6o may be allowed to hang down, as shown in Fig. III.
19 represents a lock, which may be of any preferred construction.
2O represents holes in the bottom of the box, 65 in which bolts may be inserted for securing the same to a suitable support.
I claim as my inventionl. A mailebox comprising an oblong fixed bottomlisection, having a ledge at its forward end, and a letter-opening at its rear end, and an oblong hinged top section telescoping the bottom section, and pivoted thereto near its 'rear end so as to tilt thereon and havingL a ledge seating on the ledge of the bottom section.

A mail-box comprising an oblong fixed bottom section, having a ledge at its forward end and a letter-opening at its rear end, and an oblong hinged top section telescoping the 8o bottom section and pivoted thereon near its rear end, so as to tilt thereon and having a lip, at each end overhanging the bottom section, and a ledge seating on the ledge of the bottom section.

A mail-box comprising an oblong fixed bottom section having a ledge at its forward end and a letter-opening at its rear end, and an oblong hinged top section telescoping the bottom section and pivoted thereto near its 9o rear end so as to tilt thereon and having a ledge seating on the ledge of the bottom section, a removable plate having a central aperture, and bolts whereby the removable plate is secured to the forward end of the top section.
