UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CHARLES PAGE; OF ELTHAM, NEW ZEALAND.
AXLE-BOX FASTENING FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 672,007, dated. April 16, 1901. Application filed fieptember 5, 1900. Serial No. 29,078. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHARLES PAGE, asubject of the Queen of GreatBritain, residing at Eltham, New Zealand, have invented new and useful Improvements in Axle- Box Fastenings for Road-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to axle-boxes of roadvehicles; and its object is to provide a reliable means for securing the axle-box upon the axle.
I form a screw-thread on the outside of the axle-box at its inner end, and a cap is screwed onto this inner end of the axle-box. In the inner face of the box I provide slots and in the cap aset-screw. When the cap is screwed up in position against leather Washers on each' side of the stop shoulder, the set-screw is screwed into one of the slots in the face of the axle-box, and the cap is thus securely locked and prevented from unscrewing. Holes are provided in the cap to fit studs of a spanner for screwing up the cap.
The drawings accompanying this specification illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the axle-box in position on an axle. Fig. 2 is an end View of the cap. Fig. 3 is a view of the inner face of the axle-box.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts.
The axle l is of ordinary make, with a stopshoulder 2.
3 is my cap, made with an internal thread 4 to fit the axle-box 5, which is screwed for this purpose.
6 is a set-screw.
7 represents holes to receive the studs of a spanner for screwing up the cap.
8 represents leather washers for excluding dirt, 9 slots cut in the inner face of the axlebox, and 10 is the usual oil-well.
The box is secured upon the axle by screwing the cap upon the end of the box and screwing the set-screw into one of slots 9.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the axle having the collar, a box having an overhanging edge portion externally screw-threaded and having its edge provided with a series of notches, a cap internally screw-threaded and fitting outside of theoverhanging portion and the set-screw passing through the cap and engaging one of the notches in the edge of the overhanging part, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM CHARLES PAGE.
