CASKET-HANDLE.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD R. SARGENT, of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Casket-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, and in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a casket-handle embodying my invention. Fig.

2 represents a reverse view of part of one of the arms and part of the handle-bar; Fig. 3, a vertical section on lines 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a horizontal section on lines 4: 4 of Fig. 3, the handle-bar being omitted; and Fig. 5, a detached detail view of the reinforcingplate.

In all figures similar letters of reference represent like parts.

This invention relates to casket-handles, and more particularly to the connection between the handle-bar and supporting-arms, and has for its object the production of an efficient connection easily manufactured, whereby the arms may be adjusted to any desired point on the handle-bar, which may be formed of a single collapsible hollow tube, without the necessity of the usual wooden core, 850.

To this end the invention consists of the novel combinations of parts described and claimed hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings, the parts desig nated by the letter A represent the handlebar, which, as shown in Fig. 3, is formed by a single hollow tube with the tips a.

B represents mounting or supporting plates adapted to be secured to the casket or other article by means of screws or by other wellknown means.

C represents the arms of the handle, pivoted at c to the plates B and having at their lower ends perforations D, through which the handle-bar A projects.

In order to rigidly connect the handle-bar within the perforations D of the arms C, I provide a novel connection which may be easily effected, so that if desired the arms may be located at different points on the bar A.

Within the perforations D is a recess or slot (1, transverse to the axis of the perforation. Within the recess or slot (1 is located a reinforcing plate or section E, which may, if desired, be rigidly connected at one end 6 to the arm C by casting the arm about the end 6 of the plate, as shown in Fig. 4, or in other suitable manner. The plate E is formed or curved, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, to conform substantially to the curved cross-section of the bar A, so that when the bar A is inserted within the arm C the plate E will fit over and partially surround the bar.

F represents a screw adapted to be screwed into a perforation f in the arm and whose inner end is adapted to bear on the back or convex side of the free end of the plate E, so that upon forcing the screw F in the plate E will tightly bind about the tube A, holding the same in place. By merely unscrewing the screw F, allowing the plate to. spring back into the recess 01, the bar A may be released, so that it can be moved in the desired direction to bring the arm C to any desired point on the bar.

Bymy invention the bar A may be made of thin hollow tubing without the use of a core of wood or other material, for if the plate E is formed of steel or other stronger material when it partially surrounds and binds the tube A the strain of the connection will be distributed over a considerable area of the tube, and on account of the stifiness of the reinforcing-plate the tube will not receive undue pressure at any one point.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a handle for caskets or other articles, the combination with a separable handle bar or tube; of an arm with a perforation through which said bar projects, having a slot or recess within said perforation; a reinforcingsection conforming substantially to a portion of the circumference of said bar or tube, and fitting within said recess or slot in said arm; and a screw for forcing said section into contact with said bar, substantially as described.
