JOHN T. GALE, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
COMBINED POLL ANDTALLY=SHEET BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 671,016, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed October 26, 1896. Serial No. 610,043. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. GALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Poll and Tally-Sheet Book, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of combined poll-booksand tally-sheets and the objects of my invention are to provide a book of this class of superior construction and arrangement, to so arrange the leaves and printed matter thereof as to greatly facilitate the work of election clerks, judges, and others, and to otherwise provide a convenient record-book of this character of such arrangement as to insure accuracy and speed in making a record of votes cast and names of voters. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a face view of my improved book, showing thereon a portion of a political ticket for the sake of illustration; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing pages of said book which are intended, as hereinafter described, to receive the names of electors.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
In the construction of my improved book I provide the pages a, which form the front portion of the book, each with two or more columns I) of horizontal lines for the reception of names of electors. To the left of each of these columns I) are arranged figures in numerical order; one for each of said horizontal lines. Above this figure-column, as indicated at b, is printed the abbreviation No, and above each of the columns I) is printed as a heading the words Names of electors. At the bottom of the last page of the poll-bo0k pages thus formed is arranged a space in which is printed such certificate as is required to be signed by the judges or other officers of the election, this space being indicated at 0.
After the poll-book pages above described are arranged one after the other in the usual book form tally-sheet leaves, which are indicated at d, and between each pair of the full leaves d I bind a leaf having half the width or half-leaf (1. At the left of the first leaf cl Precinct, Ward, and City, Village,
or 'Iownship. Each of the leaves d and d is provided with horizontal parallel linesf. Beginning at about the center of the width of the left-hand leaf cl are vertical and parallel lines g, which cross the linesfat right angles therewith and which are continued throughout the remainder of the said first leaf d and on both faces of the half-width leaf 05. These vertical lines g are also continued on the inner half of the adjoining leaf d, terminating adjacent to a vertical column 12, on said last-named leaf, said column having as a heading the word Total. The vertical column or space 7t to the right of the totalcolumn h is designed to have printed at the head thereof such certificate as may be required to be signed by the judges and clerks ofthe election, while the remainder of the said column may be used for other purposes. In two rows of the upper squares in, formed by the intersection of the horizontal lines f and Vertical lines g, are printed numbers in multiples of five, said numbers running from left to right and being arranged alternately in the upper and lower rows of said squares. These numbers may, however, be arranged inv straight horizontal rows and the alternate arrangement omitted. At the head of the column at of horizontal lines f, which is between the first vertical line 9 and the marginal space e, is printed the name of a political party, and beneath such heading are arranged between alternate horizontal spaces the names of the offices. These office names or titles are arranged at the left of the said horizontal spaces, while the names of the candidates therefor are arranged at the right of the succeeding horizontal spaces, said candidates names being adjacent to the first vertical row of squares or tally-spaces 70.
As indicated at 0, each of the full-width tally-sheet leaves, which are arranged after the first leaves d, above described, is provided with a projecting index-taken which is printed the name of the party for which the leaves with which said tab is connected are to be used. In this manner it will be observed that a set of the leaves (1 d d are provided for each political party and may be readily turned to in marking tallies for candidates on different tickets.
In order to illustrate the manner of tallying or marking the votes cast for different candidates, I have indicatedin the squares below the numbers which appear in the squares 7c tally-marks. These tally-marks are inserted one at a time opposite the official title of the candidate and opposite the candidates name, each candidate thus having the benefit of two rows of the squares or spaces is. In the partial ticket illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the first five votes given for John Roe for governor are inserted in the first square or check-space after the words For governor, while the second five tally-marks are inserted in the space beneath and adjoining the name John Roe. The next five votes are again placed in the upper row, this system of alternately marking the tallies in the upper and lower rows of squares being adapted to be contin u ed throughout thelength of the lines above which said marks are made and the total vote being adapted to be inserted in the total-column h. In order to ascertain at a glance the number of votes which any candidate may have, it is obvious that it will be only necessary to consult the figures in the upper two rows of squares lo.
Owing to the employment of the index-tabs 0, it is obvious that the ticket of any political 1 party may readily be turned to, which will be of great assistance and convenience in recording mixed votes. It will also be observed that by the construction of my improved tallysheet book the leaves forming the tally-sheets are so arranged and bound as to facilitate the recording of votes when different tickets are in the field.
By combining the poll-book leaves with the form of tally-sheet leaves herein described it is obvious that my improved book will greatly facilitate the keeping of a correct record of votes and admit of the record being rapidly made.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tally-sheet comprising a blank having a series of spaced lines running across said blank in one direction; intermediate lines located between said lines; other lines located on said blank and crossing said lines and intermediate lines, whereby groups of squares will be formed between said spaced lines; and a key having a series of squares corresponding with and arranged similarly to the squares between each pair of said spaced lines, said key containing numbers arranged numerically, one of said numbers corresponding to each of said squares of each group and equal to the total number of tallies in its corresponding square and the preceding squares.
JOHN T. GALE.
