Letters Patent No. 67,085, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHURNS.
@te tlgrhnle referat tu in lips that @atout nur making part tf tige same.
TC ALL WHOM IT MAYy GCN CERN Be it known that we, CHARLES VOGTand XAVIER KRAPF, both of Allentown, in the county of Lehigh, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Constructing and Operating Churns; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to malte and use the same, reference being had to-theaccompanying drawing, forming part of this speciflcation, in which drawing- Fg-ure l represents a sectional side elevation of this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan or top-view of the same. l
4Figure 3 is a sectional rear elevation thereof.
Figure 4 is a modification of this invention, showing its application to a common dasher-churn.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. I
This invention relates to a churn, which is operated by the action of av spring or weight power, of the spring o'r weight being controlled and regulated by an adjustable roller or friction-brake in such that a. uniform motion of the churn-barrel is obtained, and. the operation of churning,
the action a manner by the aid of spring or weight power, and itis provided Witha lid, which is held at one end by an adjustable hinge, and at the other end by a cam-shapedclamp, in such a manner that, by means of said hinge and, clamp, any change caused by shrinkage or expansion of the Wood canbea-compensated, and the lid -can always bereadily adjusted to close tight and to prevent any loss of cream by leakage.
4 A represents' a, frame, made of iron or any other suitable material capable of forming substantial lbearings for the shaft B, Aon which the barrel C of the churn is mounted. 0n the shaft B is also mounted a pinion, a, which connects by asuitable train of gear-wheels with the main wheel b, to which motion is imparted by the action of a spring or weight. The motion ofthe shaft B is controlled by a brake, lD, which consists of a hinged strap, carrying a frictionroller, which can be made to bear with more or less force against a drum, c, mounted on the shaft B, a thumb-screw, d, being provided which serves -to regulate the force of thebrake. By this dasher attached to it, and the' churning, jby spring or weight power, is rendered practicable, whereas, without the adjustable brake, the motion produced by the spring or weight power is not uniform, being too fast at one time, so as to cause a splashing of the cream, or too slow at another time for the success or rapid progress of the churning operation; and, furthermore, the spring or weight power, having its motion regulated,- will run much longer than it will if its motion islnot controlled. The barrel C, which I use in preference to an ordinary flasher-churn, is mounted on the shaft C, and it is provided with a lid, e, which is connected to the bodyf of the barrel by a hinge, g, onehalf of which is rigidly attached to the lid of the barrel, while its other half Ais made adjustable `by means of a screw, It, which passes through a bracket, z', and is tapped into a lug rising from vthat part of the hinge which is connected to thc body of the barrel, so that, if the wood of thc barrel shrinks, by
turning the screw L the-lid can 'be' drawn up tight against the body; or if the wood swells, the hinge can be released, and injury to the barrel can be prevented. The lid is locked by a cam-shaped clamp, j, which catches overtwo studs lf: Z, one of which is rmlyattached to the lid, and the other to the body of the barrel, The clamp consists of an oval or cam-shaped ring, provided with a lever handle, and sol arranged that the same, when turned in one direction, can be readily dropped over the studs vc Z, and after it has been dropped over these studs, by turning the lever-handle, the lid is drawn up tight against the barrel, and anyloss of cream by leakageduring the operation of the churn can be readily prevented.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The'arrangement and combination of the churn-barrel C, adjustable hinge g, cam-shaped clamp j, adjust. able brake D, and driving-shaft B, all constructed and 'operating substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.
XAVER KRAPF, CHARLES VOGT.
