UNiTnD STATES PATENT OFFICE.

TH ROTTLE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,737, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed November 9, 1900. lerial No. 35,979. (No model.)
To ,ZJ/ wiz/om. t may concern.'
Be it known that we, GEORG SOHMIDBAUER, residing` at Munich, and JULIUS ERNST, residing at Regensburg, Germany, subjects of the Kingl of Bavaria, have invented certain new and useful Ini provements in 'lhrottle-Valves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to that class of valves which are controlled by the pressure oi' the i'luid within them and are automatically closed on a sudden decrease of such pressure.
The valves may be used in connection with any i'luid-presslu-e, such as steam, gas, or air, and the invention comprises the details of cunstruclioi'i hereinafter set forth, and particrrlarly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which the letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure. l is a sectional elevation showing our improved valve located in the steam-dome of a boiler, certain parts being shown in plan. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the valve-casing, the depeudentguide-rod being shown in plan. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the valve. Fig. Ll is a vertical section of Lhe valve. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5 5, showing the construction of the bifurcated lever and con nected parts.
In the present case the valve is shown built in the dome of a boiler; but it will be readily understood that a separate housing could be formed around the valve, which could then be mounted in any pipe system, in the open air, or in any other desirable manner.
The steam-valve A is mounted on the dome in the usual manner, and within the dome a bend CL is attached, having its upper end in communication with the valve-housing on the outside. The lower end of the bend carries the valve-seat support or casing b, having the valve-seam' secured at its lower edge and a spider b', supporting a central sleeve t", in which the4 downwardly-extending spindle or guide-rod c is rigidly attached by means of the shoulder and upper nut, as will be seen at Fig. 2. On this spindle@ the valve slides up and down. the following parts: the cup d, preferably made of copper-plate, for the sake of lightness, the sleeve-f, mounted certrally therein and arranged to slide on the spindle c, and
the upper guide-plate or spider g, fitting into the top of the cup slightly below the rim of the same and having a central ring to fit onto the shoulder formed in the upper part of the sleeve f, Fig. 4. The cupe is held up against the shoulder e', formed at the lower end of the 6o sleeve, by means of a nut e. The lower end of the spindle c is turned down toV form a shoulder c', against which au arm It, extend` ing upwardly, is held up by means of the nut c2, said arm or support 7.: serving as the fulcrum of a bent lever l, having its horizontal arm bifurcated to embrace the spindle c and its lower arm bent horizontally to carry a weight m,adjustable thereon. The cup d rests on the bifurcations o and is carried thereby. 7o
The weight fm, is adjusted to allow theyalve to remain open when the proper pressure is on both sides of the samei. e., when the pressure in the dome of the boiler and in the pipe beyond the valve A is equal. pressure outside the valve A or d g drops sud denly-t'or instance, in the case of a pipe bursting or from any other disorder-the pressure in the dome will immediately force the valve d g up against its seat and prevent the 8o further escape of steamthrough the passage a. In order to open the valve when starting, it will be necessary to establish equal pressure on both sides of the same, and this is effected by means of a by-pass consisting of a small pipe n, leading from the dome into the housing of the valve A on the steam side of the same.
In order to properly tighten up the valve d g on its spindle, a gland h is provided, 9o
which is screw-threaded to the spindle c and on which the sleeve j' of the valve slides. As
already stated, the weight m acts as a counterpoise to keep the valve open when the pressure is the sameat both sides of the same, and since the valve is of a very light con- The said valve is composed of 5o As soon as the 75 struction the Weight need not be very large and may easily be adjusted on the arm of the lever Z.
We claim as our invention- 1. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a guide-rod secured thereto, a valve arranged to slide on said rod, a lever fulcrumed on said rod and having one extremity engaging said valve, and a counterbalancing-weight mounted on said lever, said casing also having a by-pass around the valve.
2. 'lhe combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a vertically-arranged guide-rod secured thereto, a valve arranged to slide on said rod, a lever fulcrumed on said rod and having one extremity engaging said valve, and a counterbalaneing- Weight mounted on said lever, said casing also having a constricted by-pass around the valve.
3. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a vertically-arranged guide-rod secured thereto, a valve arranged to slide on said rod, a lever fulcrumed on said rod, said lever having one extremity bifurcated and having said bifurcation partly surrounding said guide-rod and also engaging said valve, and a counterbalancing-Weight mounted on said lever, said casing also having a by-pass around the valve.
4. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a vertically-arranged guide rod extending downwardly therefrom, a cup-valve arranged to slide on said guide-rod, an arm secured to said rod, a lever fulcrumed to said arm, said lever having one extremity bifurcated and having said bifurcation partly surrounding said rod and also engaging said cup-valve, a counterbalancing-Weight mounted on said level', said casing also having a by-pass around the valve.
5. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a guide-rod secured thereto, a valve arranged to slide on said rod, a lever fulcrumed on said rod and having one extremity engaging said valve, and counterbalancing-Weight mou nted on said lever.
6. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a vertically-arranged gude-rod secured thereto, a valve arranged to slide on said rod, a lever fulcrumed on said rod, said lever having one extremity bifurcated and having said bifurcation partly surrounding said guide-rod and also engaging said valve, and a counterbalancing-weight mounted on said lever.
7. The combination in a pressure-regulator, of a valve-casing having a vertically-arranged guide rod extending downwardly therefrom, a cup-valve arranged to slide on said guide-rod, an arm secured to said rod, a lever fulcrumed to said arm, said lever having one extremity bifnrcated and having said bifurcation partly surrounding said rod and also engaging said cup-valve, and a counterbalancing-Weight mounted on said lever.
In Witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presenceof two Witnesses.
