COMBINATION DRIER, COOKER, AND PRESSER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 670,436, dated March 26, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ANTON SOHMIDSEDER, a citizen of the United States,residing at Brooklyn, in' the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combination Drier, Cooker, and Presser, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to new and useful improvementsin apparatus for cooking,pressing, and drying fish, fruit, or garbage, 850.; and its, primary object is to provide a device which is simple of construction, durable, cheap to manufacture, easy to operate, and effective in use.
To these ends the invention consists in providing a cylinder having a double casing and provided with suitable inlets and outlets. Means are provided for directing steam into the casing and into the cylinder at the same time or alternately, and exhausts therefor are provided. Disks are fitted within the cylinder, at the ends thereof, and are connected by mixers, as will be hereinafter more fully described. These disks are mounted upon a shaft, which is provided with right and left threads, meeting at the center of the shaft. Each set of threads engages a preferably-perforated disk,having recesses in the edge thereof for the reception of the mixers upon which they are slidably mounted.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the mixer.
Referring to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 l are standards upon which is mounted a cylinder 2 of any suitable material, as sheet metal. This cylinder is provided at each end with a head 3, having a circular recess 4: at the center of the inner face thereof. Each recess is adapted to receive a cylindrical boss 5, extending from the center of a disk 6, and these disks are connected at regular intervals by strips 7. Apertures are formed at the centers of the recesses 4 and bosses 5, and within these is mounted a shaft 8. The shaft extends through one head of the cylinder and is secured to a pulley 9, adapted to be operated in any suitable manner; A'setscrew 10 is fitted in the oppositej'cylinderhead and is adapted to bear upon the adjacent boss 5, thereby preventing the rotation of the mixer.
Extending in opposite directions from the center of the shaft 8 are right and left hand threads, upon each of which is mounted a perforated disk 11, having recesses in its edge for the reception of the strips 7. It is obvious that when the shaft is revolved in one direction the disks Will be drawn together, whereas a reverse movement of the shaft will separate them.
The cylinder 2 is inclosed by an air-tight jacket 12, formed preferably of sheet metal. A steam-pipe 13 opens into the compartment formed by the jacket, and a suitable outlet 14 extends therefrom. Pipes 15 and 16 also project into the interior of the cylinder 2 and are adapted to supply and exhaust steam, respectively. Within the top of the cylinder and its jacket is arranged an inlet 17, having a suitable cover 18. A door 19 is arranged in the bottom of the cylinder and provided with a drain 20 for the discharge of liquid. This door can be locked in position in any desired manner, as by means of a catch 21.
In operation the disks 11 are slid apart by turning the shaft 8. Material is then fed into the cylinder through the inlet 17 and steam admitted thereto through the pipe 15. After the same has been thoroughly cooked the shaft is again revolved, forcing the disks 11 slowly together and pressing the contents of the cylinder together. The set-screw 10 is then released from the boss 5, and the disks 6- will be revolved within the cylinder, carrying the strips 7 therewith and thoroughly mixing the contents. The water will pass through the perforations of the disks and can be drawn off through the drain 20. Steam is then admitted into the jacket 12 through the pipe 13 until the material is dried, when it can be removed after opening the door 19.
In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, though I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications maybe made therein without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention,what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a cylinder; of a shaft therein having right and left hand threads, a perforated disk upon each thread, and means for revolving the shaft.
2. The combination with a cylinder; of a shaft therein having right and left hand threads, a perforated disk upon each thread, and means for preventing the rotation of the disks.
3. The combination with a cylinder; of a shaft therein having right and left hand threads, a perforated disk upon each thread, disks within the cylinder at the ends thereof, and strips connecting the disks and serving as guides for the perforated disks.
4. The combination with a cylinder; of a shaft therein having right and left hand threads, a perforated disk upon each thread, disks within the cylinder at the ends thereof, a boss upon each disk revoluble within the end of the cylinder, strips connecting said disks and serving as guides for the perforated disks, and means for preventing rotation of the strips and their disks.
5. The combination with a cylinder; of a jacket inclosing the same, a steam-inlet and an outlet to and from the jacket, a steam inlet and outlet to and from the cylinder, an inlet-door, an outletdoor, a drain within the outletdoor, and means within the cylinder for mixing and compressing the material therein. I
6. The combination with a cylinder; of a jacket inclosing the same, a steam-inlet and an outlet to and from the jacket, a steam inlet and outlet to and from the cylinder, an inlet-door, an outlet-door, a drain within the outlet-do0r, a shaft within the cylinder hav ing right and left hand threads, a perforated disk upon each thread, disks within the cyl' inder at the ends thereof, and strips connecting the disks and serving as guides for the perforated disks.
