Description

i @uitrit tatrs atnt @ffice OBEN B. SMITH, or PAL-MER, MASSACHUSETTS'.
Letters Patent No. 66,996, dated July 23, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOOM-PICKERS.
TO ALL PERSONS T0 WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME: n.
Be it known that I, OREN B. SMITH, of Palmer, in the countyV of Hampden, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new-and useful Improvement in the Application of a Loom-Picker to its Staff; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully'described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a side elevation, and
Figure 2 a front view, and
Figure 3 a horizontal and transverse section of a picker and upper portion of a stall' connected in accordance with my invention.
' In the drawings, A denotes a. picker, and B the head or upper part of its staii. The picker is composed of a series of pieces, a a a, of leather or raw hide, placed side by side on one another and cemented or otherwise {ixed together. Sometimes they are not connected, except by the screw or devices'by which they are held to the staff.
In fastening apicker to its steif by a screw, or by a. screw and nut, it hasibeen found very difficult, if not` impossible, to prevent unscrewing of the screw or the nut during use of the picker by reason of the concussions or jar incident thereto. In carrying out my invention I so apply the screw-bolt and its nut to the picker and the staff that when the screw is set up into thevnnt neither of them can revolve independently of the part against which it is borne, whether thatpart be the picker-or the staff. For this reason I form the nut, as well as the head of the screw, so as to clasp opposite surfaces of the parts against which they are to rest. In other words, I make the nutD and the head a of the screw-bolt with ears I b, to lap on the sides of the parts against which they are-to rest.
In applying-the picker t0 its staff I first insert the screw-bolt through the former, and after having put the nut in place on the staff, I by means of the picker as a lever pass the screw into the picker and turn it into the nut so as tov draw the picker and the staff together. Now as the tail part e of the picker will always be in the slot of the lay when the picker is in use, it will'be impossible for the picker to be revolved, and unless it is revolved the' disconnection of the picker and the stall' cannot take place. i
From the above it will be seen that the` nature of myinvention consists in so connecting or 'applying the screw-bolt, as well as the nut, tothe picker or the sta in such manner as to be incapable of being revolved relatively to the part against which it is borne, the two being connected by,revolving .either the picker relatively to the staif or the staff relatively to the picker. The nut, as well as the head of the bolt, may be polygonal and sunk `in the wood or the leather, but this is not so useful a mode of carrying out my invention as that where the head and nut are provided with ears, as exhibited 'in the drawings.
I claim as my invention the application of the screw-bolt and its nut to the picker :1nd 'the staff', substantially as described, that is, sc that when the screw is setup into the nut neither oftllen can turn independently of the part against which it is borne.
I also claim the construction of the screw and nut, viz, with the ears b b bb arranged on them as and for the purpose specified.
OBEN B. SMITH.
