ALBERT L. TREESE, OF JENNINGS, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
BALING- PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669.948. dated March 12. 1901.
Application filed July 9, 1900. Seria] No. 22,992. CNO model.)
To all whom t 7am/y concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. TREEsE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jennings, in the county of Pawnee and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and Improved Baling-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved baling-press arranged to compress the material to be baled into a very compact form and at a comparatively low cost.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the hydraulic cylinder.- Fig. 3 is a like view of the hydraulic piston. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan View of the improvement. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the same on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4:, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation ot' a modified form of the improve-v ment.
With my improvement, presently to be described in detail, the bale formed in an ordi# nary cotton-press, for instance, receives a second or final compression to form a very com-V pactbale, and for the purpose described my invention is preferably an adjunct or attachment to a cotton-press. For instance, as shown in the drawings, the improvement is shown applied to a cotton-press for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 498,052 were granted to Frederick Garrauxon May 23, 1893. In this cotton-press two baliug-chambers A A are used and mounted on aframe B, having a platformB and centrally mounted to turn on a suitable post O, one of the baling-chambers being below a tramperhead D for tramping the material in the baling-chamber through a foldable and removable top portion E of the balingchamber. When snliicient material has been tramped into the baling-chamber, then the frame B is turned to carry this baling-chamber out from under the tramper-head D and to carry the other empty baiing-chamber under the said tramper-head. The balingchainber containing the material is now in alinement With a plunger F, held on the upper end of a screwrod G, adapted to be moved up or down by suitable machinery to compress the material in this baling-chamber against an overhead platen H. When the bale has thus been formed in the ordinary press,.theu the screwrod Gr is again run down to carry the plunger F along and finally out of the balingchamber to allow of turning the frame l and of carrying the other meanwhile lled baling chamber under the plunger for a repetition of the above-described operation.
y With my improvement I make use of a removable follower I, placed on the top of the plungerF and carried with the same through the baling-chamber While compressing the material therein, and When the plunger F iinally reaches an uppermost position then the removable follower I is connected with rods J, secured to a plate K, carrying acyl inder L, mounted to slide overa fixed piston N, supported on a bed-plate O, carried by the framework of the machine. Water under pressure from a hydraulic pump is forced through a pipe VP and the piston N into the cylinder L, so as to cause the cylinder to move and to carry the plate K, the rods J, and the removable follower I along to give the already compressed material a second or final compression and to form a very compact bale. This second compression takes place while the plunger F is on the downward movement, so that very little time is lost in operating the machine. The cylinder L is provided with a suitable gage Q for indicating the pressure in said cylinder. After the bale has received its dual compression it is tied in the usual manner, and then the pressure in the cylinder L is gradually reduced to allow the piston N and the parts' connected therewith to move downward, so that the finished bale can be removed from the removable follower and be shipped to its destination. The removable follower is then removed from the rods J and is placed again l in position on the plunger F at the time the IOO latter is in a lowermost position and is again ready to start upward to compress the material in the following baling-chamber.
In the modied form shown in Fig. 6 instead of'a single platen H two platens H' H2 are provided, mounted on a frame H3, tnrning on a post H4,formingpart of the framework. By this arrangement either platen H' or H2 can be brought in alinement with the baling-chamber in which the material is compressed at the time by the pln nger F. For instance, as shown in Fig. 6, the platen H' is in alinement with the baling-chamber A' and the plunger F, and when the material has been compressed by said plunger then. the removable follower I is connected by rods R with the frame H3 adjacent to the platen H',
and after the plunger F has started on its.
downward travel then the frame H3 is turned to swing the platen H' with the baled material thereon into a left-hand position and to bring the other platen H2 over the plunger F. The removable follower I is now connected by rods J with the plate K', carrying the hydraulic cylinder L', mounted to slide on a piston N', through which extends a supply-pipe P for forcing water into the cylinder from the hydraulic press. When the cylinder L' is now forced upward, a second compression of the baled material takes place to form a very compact bale. In the meantime the material to be baled is trampled in the first baling-chamber while the material in the other baling-chamber is undergoing initial pressure, so that the three different operations of tramping the material, subjecting it to initial pressure, and finally pressing it take place approximately at the same time.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentc 1. The combination with a baling-chamber and a plunger operating therein in conjunction with a platen, to give a mechanical compression to the material in said baling-chamber, of a removable follower carried by said plunger, and a hydraulic compressing device arranged in alinement with the baling-chamber and adapted to be connected with said removable follower, to give a continued and final compression to the material against the platen, as set forth.
2. The combination with a platen and a removable follower between which platen and follower th'e material to be finally compressed into a bale is arranged, of a hydraulic device arranged at one side of the platen, and means for connecting said removable follower to the said hydraulic device, to compress the material between said platen and said removable follower, as set forth.
3. A baling-press, comprising revoluble baling-chambers adapted to be alternately filled with the material to be baled, a plunger operating in conjunction with one of said chambers at a time, to compress the material therein against a platen, a removable follower adapted tobe carried by said plunge r, a f rame carrying a plurality of platens for compressing the material in conjunction with said removable follower,a hydraulic device arranged at one side of the platen, and means for connecting the same with said removable follower, to nally compress the material, as set forth.
4. The combination with a platen and a removable follower between Which Vthe material is to be compressed, of a hydraulic device comprising a fixed piston, a cylinder movable thereon, and rods connecting said cylinder with said removable follower, so that upon forcing a fluid under pressure into the cylinder the latter is caused to move on the piston and move the removable follower in the salne direction, to compress the material between the platen and the removable follower, substantially as shown and described.
5. Thecombination with a baling-chamber, a reciprocating plunger therein, and a platen arranged above the baling-chamber, of a removable follower on the plunger, a hydraulic motor above the platen, and rods connecting the removable follower with the hydraulic motor, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a baling-chamber, a plunger ltherein, means for moving the plunger in and out of the chamber, and a platen .arranged above the baIng-chamber, of a removable follower on the pln nger, a hydraulic motor above the platen, and rods connecting the removable follower with the cylinder of the motor, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT L. TREESE.
