Description

citen tetes @anni @ffice IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-PLANING MACHINES.
ilgt tlgehule tettml tu in lgn's rtters ateut 2mb mztkin'g gnrt nf tige stmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that'I, G. 'EL OBER, of Newbury, in the oountyvof Geauga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Revolving Cutter-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings`making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the cutter side of the head.
Figure 2 is an edge view ofthe same.
Figure 3 is a view of the opposite side of fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
Thishead consists of an iron disk, A, g. 3, with a deep boss, forming a concave shoulder, B, fig. 2, to which are screwed the adjustable cutters C, curving outward to the edge of the iange or 'rim D. The periphery of this ange or rim is serrated or cut in little furrows, similar to a file, and for which purpose it is practically intended, andalso for another purpose, as will hereafter be shown. This bend is placed upon the shaft ofthe lathe in which irregular forms are turned. As the article is shaped or cut by -the several cutters C. it is rasped and smoothed by the tile-like periphery of the head as it leaves or passes from the cutters, and thus the work leaves the machine in a more finished condition than it would vdo without being thus rasped, saving by this means much of the hand labor required' to smooth the article as it vordinarily comes from the machine. I Also, the broad face of the periphery serves to prevent the stick, as it is being turned, from trembling, and for this special purpose it is of great value, as the work, if of some considerable length and of small diameter, requires to be steadied in a rest in order that 4the turning shall be true and smooth. To accomplish this many devices` have been used, but with much trouble and expense, and in many cases without good results. In thus providing the head with abroad-face, which, as will be seen, is ush with the turned part'of the work, gives at once the necessary rest for the work, and the trembling in consequence prevented by this simple and inexpensive rest.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ,is- The herein-described cutter-head A, provided with a serrated rim, D, when used as and for the purpose setforth, in combination with the adjustable cutter C.
G. H. OBER. Witnesses:
J. H. BURRIDGE, J. HOLMES.
