Be it known that l, JOSEPH N. ZOELLER, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of St. Matthews, in the county of Jeierson and vState of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Adjusting Attachment for Gun- Stocks, of which the following is a full, clear,

vand exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide an attachment for gun-stocks by which the stock may be changed and locked 'to any desired angle, thus enabling one gun to be adapted for various purposes for which heretofore guns with straight stocks or with different inclinations of stocks have beenV` deemed necessary for eective service.

The invention-consists in the novel .construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed ont in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a partial vertical longitudinal section through a part of a gun-stock, including the grip and the attachment, the latter being shown applied. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sect-ion, taken practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 isasection simihowever, a slight departure in the construction of seine parts of the attachment.

This head is preferably of a thickness correspending to the width between the plates 10,` as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The adjusting-head 12 is semicircular and is provided in its periphery, particularly at the rear, -with teeth 13. The adjustingehead is loosely fitted in a cori-espendingly-shaped chamber 14, made in the forward portion ofthe stock A, and a pivot-pin 15 is passed through adjusting-head and through side plates 16, countersunk in the side faces'ot the forward portion of the stock A. The b'olt'18 is normally held between the teeth of the adjusting-head by a coil-spring 20, which has bearing against the inner end of the bolt, and a second spring 21 of a bow The two springs are provided in order -that severe strain will not be sustained by either. The bolt is carried out of engagement with the adjusting-head by passing a pin 22 through the bolt and out through a transverse channel 23 made in the stock A and the side plates 16 of the stock, as illusltrated in Fig. 2, and buttons 24 are preter-` ably attached to the ends of the pin 22.

When it is desired to change the inclination of the stock with reference to the barrel, the pin 22 is slid rearward, thus carrying the bolt 18 from enga gement with theadjustinghead, and after the grip has been moved to give the necessary inclination to the barrel or to render the barrel straight with the stock the bolt is released and will enter the most convenient space between the teeth 13 and' hold the grip and stock in their adjusted position.

In Fig. 3 a bolt 18, which corresponds to the bolt 18 shown in the other iigures, is 0perated through the medium of an angle-lever 26, and this angle-lever is fulcrumed in a recess 25 made in one of the stock side plates 161 The inner end of the lever 26 has an elongated slot 27 made therein, which slotted end of the lever enters a suitable opening in the bolt 18 and is connected with the bolt by a pin 28 or a like device. When the outer portion of the lever 26 is within theopening 25, the bolt 18 is in locking positiony relative to the adjusting-head; Ibut when an adjustment is to be made the outer member of the 1ever26 is pulled laterally outward, thus carrying the bolt 18,a out from engagement with the adjusting-head.

. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a gun, a stock and a grip, an adjusting-head pivoted Within the stock and attached to thegrip, the head being provided with peripheral teeth', a bolt held to slide in thevstock and enter the spacesv between the teeth in the adjusting-head, and means, substantially as described, for manipulating the said bolt at the exterior portion of the stock, for the purpose specified. c
