NITED TAT-ES ATENT FFICE- STOP AND WASTE COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,817, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed January 10, 1901. Serial No. 42,708. (No model.)
To ctlZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER J. ASBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Right and Left Hand Stop and Waste Cocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to cooks for water and gas pipes, 850.; and it has reference particularly to devices of this nature known as stop and waste cocks.
The object of the invention is to construct a stop and waste cock so that it may be reversed with despatch and convenience and at the same time be as simple, compact, and durable in construction as possible.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts, and wherein-- Figures 1 and 2 are views in side elevation of my improved stop and waste cock provided with one form of detent for limiting the movement of the plug which in said figures is shown in respectively open and closed positions by the breaking away of a portion of the casing of the device. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectivelya side view and a top plan view of said cock with the handle and detent removed. Fig. 5is a top plan View of the bandle and detent shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 6 and7 are respectively a rear and a top plan View of the upper portion of a cock provided with another form of detent, and Fig. 8 is a side view of the upper portion of the improved cock as adapted for operation by a T- shaped handle or key.
In said drawings, a designates the casing of the cook, the same being of ordinary construction and having the usual pipe connections b and c and waste-outlet d.
6 denotes the usual tapered plug or valve, having the ordinary main port f and wasteport g, the latter communicating with the former. Said plug is secured in place by a said stops nut h, which is screwed onto the lower protruding and threaded end thereof, its upper end protruding from the usual crown i, which crown is formed with stops jj and 7a. The stops j j are disposed a little to one side of the longitudinal centralline of the cock, while the other stop 7c is disposed midway between The top of the plug 6 is squared or of some other non-circular form, as at 1, being adapted to receive a handle on or a T-shaped key it, both of these parts being provided with a socket portion 0, having a recess 19 to fit the squared head of the plug. Said socket portion is provided with a projection g. This projection may be formed either with a pair of vertical parallel ribs r, forming guides, or with a pair of threaded vertical orifices s.
The detent which I provide may be in two forms. In the one case it consists of asquared block 25, adapted to snugly fit between the ribs r and having a lug it. projecting down wardly from one of its cornersinto the space between the stop and one of the stopsj. This detent is secured in place by a screw c, which penetrates it, and is adapted to be screwed into the side of the socket of the key or handle and into the threaded orifice w in the head of the plug. The screw thus acts to secure the handle or key in place on the head of the plug. In the other case the detent is simply in the form of a screw 00, which may be tapped into either of the threaded orifices s of the projection (1. In this case the handle or key may be secured in place by a separate set-screw y, which is tapped into the socket portion and takes against the head of the plug in either of two diametrically-disposed notches 2 thereof.
In reversing the cock when provided with that form of detent first described the handle having been removed and replaced on the head of the plug in a diametrically-reversed position the detent is removed, turned over, and reapplied, so that its lug will now work in the space on the side of the stopj opposite to thatin which it previously worked. In reversing the cock when provided with the other form of detent, having removed and reversed the handle, the screw w is withdrawn from one orifice s and inserted into the other.
If desired, and as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the
.head of the valve-stem may be formed With both the orifices w and recessesz, so as to aocommodate a handle orkey whether the one or the other form of det'ent and securing means for the handle is carried by said handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stop and waste cook, the combination, With the casing, of a turn plug or valve arranged in said casing, said casing having pairs of stops arranged about said plug or valve, a handle fitted to said valve or plug, and a detent adapted to engage said stops to limit the motion of said plug or valve, said detent being mou nted interchangeablyin said handle so as to engage the stops in either pair of stops, substantially as described.
2. 'In a stop and waste cook, the combination, with the casing, of a turn plug or valve arranged in said casing and protruding therefrom at one end, said casing having pairs of stops arranged about the protruding end of said plug or valve, a handle fitted to the protruding end of said. plug or valve, and a detent adapted to engage said stops to limit the motion of said plug or valve, said detent being mounted interchangeably in saidhandle so as to engage the stops in either pair of stops, substantially as described.
3. In a stop and waste cock, the combination, with the casing, of a turn plug or valve arranged in said casing and protruding therefrom at its upper end, said casing having pairs of stops arranged about said plug or valve, a handle fitted to the protruding end of said plug or valve and having a projection, and a detent adapted to engage said stops to limit the motion of said plug or valve, said detent being mounted interchangeably in said projection so as to engage the stops in either pair of stops, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of December, 1900.
SYLVESTER J. ASBELL.
