UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. TAYLOR, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. 85 T. FAIRBANKS 85 00., OF SAME PLACE.
REGISTERING DEVlCE FOR PRINTING-BEAMS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 669,813, dated March 12, 1901.
' Application filed November 29, 1899. Serial No. 738,669. No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia, State 5 of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering Devices for Printing-Beams, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and I figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in weighing-scales of the type known as printing or registering beams, as illustrated, for' example, in the patent granted Henry Fair- I banks January 18,1898, No. 597,640; and the object of the invention is to provide a novel device for pressing the ticket against the typenumerals on the beam and poise-slide to make the proper record of weight on said ticket. In printing-beams constructed on the style indicated in the above patent when the ticket has been inserted a direct vertical pressure is applied to it to force it against the type, while the purpose of the present construction is to give a rolling pressure as the pressing device passes from its normal position into engagement with the ticket to cause the impression to be taken.
The invention therefore consists, broadly, in applying a rolling pressure to the ticket to cause it to receive the impression, and ,finally, itconsistsin the mattershereinafterdescribed, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the main and auxiliary poises of a printing or registering beam, the front portion being removed to show the internal mechanism. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the poise, the parts for making the impression being shown partly in full lines and partly in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a detail front view of the. block supporting the impression-roll.
In the drawings, 1 represents a scale-beam; 2, the rear portion of the main poise; 3, the front plate thereof, and t the auxiliary poise or poise-slide, 5 being the pointer carried thereby to register with the graduations on the front of the main poise, these parts and the means for operating them being substan tially similar to the corresponding parts in the patent above referred to. Secured to the back side of the main poise is a block 6, the securing means being the screws a a, passing through vertical slots 1) 1) into the body of the poise, nicety of vertical adjustment being effected by means of the adjusting-screw 9. The block 6 has a vertical slot or recess d, adapted to receive a roll 13, supported on trunnions or a short shaft or pin 6, screwheaded at each end, and these trunnions or shaft 6 are supported in slots 0, extending at right angles to the beam, which at the front end has a depression or pocket f, affording a seat for the roll-shaft or trunnions. To the block 6 is pivoted, by means of the screw or pin j, a lever having the handle portion 7 extending slightly toward the front in position within easy reach of the operator, while the short arm of the lever is bifurcated or U- shaped, shown at g, each arm being slotted at its upper end, in which slots h rest the outer ends of the trunnions or shaft 6 on which the roll 13 is secured. The slot 8 is provided for the insertion of the ticket upon which the weight is to be recorded. The handle 7 is normally held in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 by the spring 2'.
In operation a ticket is inserted in the slot 8 under the type, and the roll-shaft restingin the pocketfample room is provided between the top of the block 6 and the under side of the type on the beam or poise slide for its insertion. The handleZis then lifted up,drawing the roll 13 out of the pocket and toward the .back of the poise, being guided in the slots 0, the ticket being impressed by a rolling pressure against the type-bars, one figure at a time. By this means much less force is 0 required to impress the ticket than is required in constructions heretofore employed, and when the pressure of the hand is released the coiled spring 1' returns the handle to normal position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina printing or registering beam for weighing-scales, means for causing the im- 10o pression of the type-numerals to be printed on the ticket, comprising an impression-roller normally out of operative engagement with the ticket and means operatively engaging said impression-roller for first raising the latter vertically into engagement with the ticket and then moving it horizontally to impart a rolling pressure upon the ticket to cause the impression to be made; substantially as described.
2. In a printing or registering beam for weighing-scales, means for impressing the ticket against the type, comprising a swinging lever and a pressure-roller carried by said swinging lever normally out of engagement with the ticket and having a combined upward and horizontal movement to press the ticket against the face of the type; substantially as described.
3. In a printing or registerii'ig beam for weighing scales, in combination with the main poise, a block secured thereto, type-numerals, a pressure-roller supporied in gnid ing-slots in said block and normally out of engagement with the type-numerals and a swinging lever provided with slotted arms, also engaging the pressure-roller; substantially as described.
4. In a printing or registering beam for weighing scales, in combination with the main poise, a block secured thereto, having horizontal slots with depressions in one or both ends, a pressure-roller having oppositelyextending trnnnions supported in said slots, a swinging lever having slots also in engagement with said trnnnious, whereby in the movement of the swingin lever the trunnions are first elevated out of the depressions and then moved horizontally in the slots of the block; substantially as described.
5. In a printing or registering beam for weighing scales, in combination with the main poise, a verticallyadjustable block cured thereto having horizontal slots with depressions in one or both ends, a. pressureroller having oppositely-extendingtrunnions supported in said slots, a swinging lever having slots also in engagement with said trunnions, whereby in the movementof the swinging lever the trunnions are first elevated out of the depressions and then moved horizontally in the slots of the block; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof- I affix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
FREDERICK W. 'lAYLOP.
