SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 669,489, dated March 5, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOSEPH RICHARDSON and GEORGE D. LANGSTON, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city of Atlanta, in the State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railway-Tickets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in an exchangescrip book and in certain novel combinations of parts therein, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a novel substitute for all mileage-tickets or credit-credentials now in use, by whatever name the same may be known; also, to preserve to the traveling public a convenient means for obtaining interchangeable mileage or its equivalent over such railways as may form the bureau by which the exchange-book is issued; also, to provide a system which adjusts itself to any rate of mileage and to special charges, such as bridge-charges and other arbitraries; also, to avoid the necessity for 2 5 giving special instructions to the conductors as to short-line mileage and to prevent collusion between passenger and conductor or agents and conductors; also, to prevent the possibility of sales of non-transferable mileage in fraud of the contract under which such mileage is issued; also, to prevent the dealing in non-transferable mileage -tickets by I ticket-brokers, commonly known as ticketscalpers; also, to provide a system by which 3 5 the auditorsof the several roads forming the bureau from which a given exchange-book is issued may keep an accurate check on the conductors of their respective lines honoring passenger-tickets sold in exchange for scrip 40 contained in such books; also, to provide a system whereby it is unnecessary to supply ticket-agents and conductors with any special blanks 0r tickets or tables of distances or arbitraries.

Three sheets of drawings accompany this specification as part thereof.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a face View of the exchange-scrip book open. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of theinner face of the cover. Fig. 3 is a face view of the open book with the duplicate contract and selling-agents stub detached. Fig. 4 is a face view of said selling-agents stub. Fig. 5 is a view of the book closed, showing the front of its cover; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary face view of a preferred scrip-strip.

Like letters and numbers refer to like parts in all the figures.

Said exchange-scrip book comprises a continuous scrip-strip A and a supply of serially- 6o numbered certificate-blanks B, attached inside to the respective lids l and 2 of a cover (1, which has a flexible back 3, connecting said lids.

The scrip-strip A is folded back and forth like the mileage-strip of a thousandmile-passage ticket and may be of the customary form, as represented in Fig. 1, but with one cent instead of one mile as its unit. Its essential parts are a selling-agents stub l, Figs. 1 and 4E, and sufficient successively-numbered coupons 5, Figs. 1 and 3 or Fig. 6. Said sellingagents stub, Fig. 4, is provided with blanks a and 1), adapted, respectively, to receive the name of the purchaser and the date of sale. Afterit receives such name and date it is detached by the agent, together with the dupli cate contract D Fig. 1, which bears the purchasers signature, and the two are forwarded by the agent with the first report of ticket sales to the auditor of his company, who transmits the duplicate contract to the rebatebureau. The scrip is used for the purchase from authorized ticket -agents of ordinary one-way-passage tickets, which may read over any or all of the lines represented by the rebate-bureau. A portion of the scrip-strip A comprising the required number of conpons 5 is torn off by the agent, who secures the signature of the passenger on the back of the detached scrip, indorses below such signature the form, consecutive number, and route of the passage-ticket purchased, stamps the detached scrip, and re mits it as the equivalent of money to the auditor of his company. The only exception to this rule is that the scrip maybe used in payment for passage on trains when boarded at places where there are no ticket-office facilities.

The scrip-strip A in all cases represents money instead of mileage and may preferably be of a special design, as represented by Fi 6. This figure also represents the substitution of ten (10) units to each of the coupons 5 instead of five units, as in the form shown in Fig. 1, and the provision of the face of the scrip-strip with spaces 0, cl, e, f, g, and h to be filled in on one coupon of each detached portion by the ticket-agent or by the conductor when the scrip is used for passage from stations where there are no ticket-office facilities, said spaces 0 and d being for the signature of the conductor and the initials of his road, the spaces 6 and f for the form and serial number of the passage-ticket to be filled in by the ticket-agent, and the spaces g and h for designations of the extent of the trip to be filled in by the agent or by the condoctor, as the case may be.

The scrip-strip Ain either form is conveniently pasted or otherwise attached at its inner end to a card 6, Figs. 1 and 3, that may be and preferably is fastened in like manner at its lower end to the lid 1 of the cover 0 and is provided with slits i and j to accommodate

7 and 8 for holding the strip back against the card, and with a slot 75, through which the strip is drawn, as in Fig. 3, and a straight-edge Z for use in detaching successive portions of the strip.

The certificate-blanks B, Fig. 3, are socured to the lid 2 of the cover 0, together with the duplicate contract D by one or more fastenings 9, of wire, and astraight-edge keeper 10, of cardboard, and are serially numbered from one to fifty l to 50) or as the case may be. Each blank has a transverse tearing-line 11, separating a non-detachable passengersstub 12, to be signed and punched by each conductor honoring a given passage-ticket,and a detachable certificate 13, to be signed by the passenger in the presence of each conductor so honoring such ticket, and to be lifted by the last conductor and forwarded through the auditor of his company to the rebate-bureau. Each stub 12 has appropriately-designated spaces m, n, 0, p, q, r, and s to receive, respectively, (m) the name of the company selling the ticket, (n) the form of the ticket, (0) its serial number, (p) the signature of the conductor, (q) the initials of his road, and (r and s) designations of the points between which the ticket is honored by each subscribing conductor, said appropriately-designated spaces, p to s, inclusive, being repeated a sufficient number of times to provide for the longest trips, andeach certificate 13 is provided with spaces if, repeated to a like extent for the successive signatures of the passenger.

The passenger is required to fill in the spaces m, n, and 0, and to sign at t, as above, and the conductor to sign at p and fill in the spaces q, 1", and s, and the conductor honoring the ticket to destination detaches the certificate 13 and sends it to the auditor of his company and through him to the rebatebureau for the comparison of the signatures thereonv with each other and with the signatures on the duplicate contract and scrip. It will be understood that the used certificateblanks B correspond in number with the passage-tickets purchased by means of the scrip detached from the scrip-strip A. Descriptions of the successive passage-tickets appear at m, n, and 0 on the stubs 12, and the parts of each blank are identified with each other by the serial Certificate No, which is printed on both, together with a common Scrip Book No.

The outer surface of the lid 1 of the cover 0 (shown in Fig. 5) is provided with a description of the system, such description being conveniently grouped under the headings General instructions, Instructions to ticket agents, and Instructions to conductors, with the foot-note: Neither this book nor any of its scrip will be honored for passage on trains nor in checking baggage except when passenger boards trains at places where there are no ticket-office facilities. The outer surface of the lid 2 (not shown) is intended to bear the following matter, suitably displayed, namely:

The inner surface of the lid 2 of the cover 0, Fig. 2, bears the passengers copy D of the contract and conditions under which the scripbook is issued and sold.

The duplicate contract D Fig. 1, includes an exact copy of the contract D, Fig. 2, followed by appropriately-designated blanks u, o, w, and 5c, intended, respectively, for (u) the signature of the original purchaser, (o) the address of the purchaser, (w) the name of the firm represented, and (x) the address of the firm, together with instructions to the selling agent.

A common serial number 562 or as the case may be) is printed on the selling agents stub 4 and each coupon 5 of the scrip-strip A on the passengers stub 12 and certificate 13 of each certificate-blank B on both sides of the cover 0 and on the duplicate contract, as above, to associate the several parts of a given scrip-book With each other and to prevent counterfeiting.

When the scrip-strip A has been exhausted, the passenger will forward the remnant of the book, including the stubs 12 of the certificate- IIO blanks B that have been used, duly signed by the several conductors, to the rebate-bureau, (or party issuing the book,) upon which he will receive the rebate to which he may be entitled.

Under this system the passenger knows the time when the application for rebate has arrived and does not have to make any calculation nor gather any loose scrip or other evidences of his rights. Hisonly duty is to present the exhausted scrip book containing the stubs, each duly signed by the conductors, which are already at hand and under one cover.

The scrip-strip A may be further modified to suit the requirements of different railwaylines or associations of lines. The printed matter on the certificate-blanks B and cover 0, or either of them, and in the contract and duplicate contract may be correspondingly changed within the scope of the respective claims appended to this specification, and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.

The term signature as hereinafter used with reference to certification by a conductor is in tended in all cases to mean the name or initials of the conductor, either written or stamped, with or without his distinctive punch-mark, or the latter alone, should this satisfy the requirements of a railway or passenger association issuing the scrip-book.

Having thus described said improvement, we claim as ourinvention and desire to patent under this specification l. The herein-described substitute for a railway-mileage ticket or mileage-credit permit consisting of a scrip-bo0k containing scrip, in an y form representing money,detachable in successive portions, for use in purchasing ordinary passage-tickets, and certificate-blanks each comprising a non-detachable certificate or' passengers stub having appropriately-designated spaces for the description of a passage-ticket and for the signatures of successive conductors honoring such ticket, and a detachable certificate or coupon having appropriately-designated spaces for successive signatures of the passenger to be written in the presence of the respective conductors, the several partsbeing mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers.

2. An exchange -scrip book comprising scrip in any form representing money detachable in successive portions exchangeable for passage-tickets, a series of non-detachable certificates or stubs having appropriately-designated spaces for descriptions of successive passage-tickets and for the signatures of successive conductors honoring such tickets respectively, detachable ownership'certificates having appropriately-designated spaces for signatures of the passenger presenting such tickets to be written in the presence of the respective conductors, and a cover within which said strip and said certificate are attached, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers.

3. An exchange scrip book comprising scrip in any form representing money detachable in successive portions exchangeable for passagetickets, a series of non-detachable certificates or stubs having appropriately-designated spaces for descriptions of successive passage-tickets and for the signatures of the conductors honoring such passage-tickets respectively, and a cover within which said scrip and said certificates are attached, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers.

4. A scrip-book having as integral parts thereof a strip or series of coupons to be detached and exchanged at ticket-ofiices for passage-tickets, certificates or stubs having appropriately -designated spaces to receive descriptions of such tickets respectively and the signatures of successive conductors honoring each ticket, and ownership certificates having appropriately-designated spaces for successive signatures of the passenger in the presence of the respective conductors, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such asnumbers.

5. A scrip-book having as integral parts thereof a strip or series of coupons to be detached and exchanged at ticket-offices for passage-tickets, non-detachable certificates or stubs having appropriately-designated spaces to receive descriptions of such tickets respectively and the signatures of successive conductors honoring each ticket, and detachable ownership-certificates having appropriatelydesignated spaces for successive signatures of the passenger in the presence of the respectiveconductors, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers.

6. A scrip-book having as integral parts thereof a strip or series of coupons to be detached and exchanged at ticket-ofiices for passage-tickets, and certificate-blanks comprising non-detachable stubs having appropriately-designated spaces to receive descriptions of such tickets respectively and the signatures of successive conductors honoring each ticket, and detachable ownership-certificates having appropriately-designated spaces for successive signatures of the passenger in the presence of the respective conductors, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers.

7. The combination, in a scrip-book, of a scrip-strip comprising a detachable selling agents stub and a series of coupons for use in purchasing passage-tickets, a series of oertificate-blanks each comprising a non-detachable stub having appropriately-designated spaces for a description of a passage-ticket and for certificates by successive conductors as to the honoring of such ticket and a detachable certificate having appropriately-designated spaces for the signature of the passenger in the presence of each conductor, a cover bearing the contract under which a refund of a portion of the purchase-money is guaranteed under conditions including the use of the scrip and passage-tickets purchased therewith by the original purchaser of the book and a detachable duplicate contract havin g a space for the signature of the purchaser of the book for comparison with the signatures of the passenger on said certificate-blanks, the several parts being mutually identified by identical marks such as numbers, substantially as hereinbefore specified.
