UNITED STATES PATENT QTFIGE.
JAMES T. ASHE, OF CHIOOPEE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
COOLER FOR BOTTLED WINE OR OTHER BEVERAGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,867, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed June 5, 1900.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES T. ASHE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Ohicopee Falls, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coolers for Bottled WVine or other Beverages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coolers for bottled wine and other beverages, the object being to provide an improved portable device of this class which is adapted to be placed for use upon a sideboard or table with all the parts so arranged that a bottle is held in position undisturbed while being emptied of its contents; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the structural elements of the device whereby said object is attained, all as hereinafter fully described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The drawing forming part of this specification illustrates in side elevation, partly in section, a cooler for bottled beverages or liquids embodying my invention.
In the drawing, Ais the body of the cooler, of proper form and dimensions to hold a bottle in inverted position and to contain ice or other cooling element surrounding said bottle. Said body is provided with a cover B, which is hinged thereto at O, which is turned back from over the body to insert the bottle and ice and is then shut to the closed position shown, thereby closing the body and preventing the admission of air thereinto. The lower end of said body is provided with a circular opening at D of suitable diameter to permit the neck of a bottle E to pass freely through it, as shown. A circular offset recess is formed around said opening D, in which is placed a packing-ring F, of rubber or similar resilient material, which when the neck of a bottle is passed through it, as shown, becomes so compressed between said neck and the adjoining part of said body that there can be no leakage of water from the ice-containing part of the body around said neck. Said bottle is provided with an ordinary bottle-faucet Serial No. 19,149. (No model.)
H, through which the contents are drawn off. Said body A is attached to a suitable base I thereunder by one or more arms J, preferably of ornamental form, as shown, said base being adapted to receive thereon a tumblertray K, whereon a glass may rest while the contents of said bottle are being drawn thereinto.
The manner of using said cooler is obvious from the foregoing description of the construction thereof, and it will be clearly understood that the cover 13 being opened the bottle to be cooled is placed in the body Ain the position shown, after which the ice L is packed around it, and, if desired, the inset part of the bottom may also be filled with ice, after which the cover may be closed, as shown. The cooler thus complete and containing the said bottle of wine or other matter may be placed upon a table or sideboard, if desired, and wine be drawn therefrom from time to time, but still preserving such of the contents as may there remain in their original unopened condition of freshness, since no air can enter the bottle when the contents are drawn therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a device for holding a bottle in an inverted position, a base adapted to hold a receptacle to receive the contents of the bottle, and an arm extending upwardly from the base, combined with a bottle-holding receptacle secured 10 the upper end of the arm, and which is provided with a cover at its top, and an opening through its bottom whereby the neck of the bottle containing a faucet projects down. directly over the receiver for the contents of the bottle, and the contents of the bottle may be drawn oif by merely operating the faucet, substantially as shown.
2. In a device for holding a bottle in an inverted position, a base adapted to hold a receiver for the contents of the bottle, an arm extending upwardly from the base, and a bottle and ice receiving receptacle secured to the upper end of the arm, combined with a cover attached to the top of the arm, and a suitable packing applied to the opening through its lower end, whereby the neck of the bottle having a faucet applied thereto is made to project through the lower end of the receiver directly over the receiver for the contents of the bottle, and the contents of the receptacle may be drawn off into a suitable receiver When the bottle is withdrawn, substantially as shown and described.
JAMES T. ASHE.
