Be it known that LHERBERT BASKERVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Helena, in the county of Napa and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipping-Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.

One object of this invention is to provide a very cheap and simple wrapper which will be adapted for thoroughly protecting articles which are liable to be injured in transportation.

Another object is to enable the wrapper to be applied and strongly fastened with the least expenditure of time and labor.

Another object'is to form a superior protection for lamp-chimneys, which can be applied with the greatest ease and economy of time.

The invention is especially applicable for articles having a bulbous portion; and another object of the invention is to provide for as thorough protection and as great convenience for handling and strength of package with a given size and weight of material as possible.

My improved wrapper is formed of a sheet having flexible qualities, but also being sufficiently stiff when in cylindrical form to support the article wrapped when the cylinder is set on end and is especially designed for lam pchimneys, although it may be used for other articles.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

My improved wrapper comprises a sheet at, having a portion 1 of its body provided with longitudinal slits 2 to form a series of bars 3 throughout said portion 1 of its body,-leaving unslitted bands 4 5 below and above the bars, a laterally-projecting hook 6 being provided at one edge of the sheet alongside the slitted portion 1 of the body, said hook 6 being adapted to catch in slits] at the other projections 12 12.

edge of said body, said sheet being slitted by slits 8,extending from one end toward the said slitted portion of the body to form terminal tongues 9 9 9", which may be folded together, one of said tongues being provided with a transverse slit 10 and another of said tongues being formed into a hook 11 to be inserted through the slitted tongue. By this construction I form a wrapper-adapted to be expanded over the bulbous portion of the article to be wrapped and securely locked at the slitted portion of the body, one end of said wrapper being closed, covered, and locked, so that a lamp-chimney will be protected around all the sides and at the top, which forms astrong and convenient handle for handling the package and for protecting the lamp-chimney in the package while the chimney is held suspended by the band below the slitted portion of the body.

The Wrapper can be applied to lamp-chimneys with extreme rapidity by reason of the centrally-arranged hook 6 at one edge of the slitted body. The workman will grasp the hook 6 in the right hand and the other edge of the Wrapper in the other hand and will bring the slitted body around the body of the lamp-chimney and will then insert the hook in the appropriate slit at the other edge of the wrapper, thus strongly securing the wrapper in place almost instantly. 9 and 9" will befolded down and the tongues 9 brought on top of them and fastened by inserting the hook 11 into the slit 10. Complete protection for the lamp-chimney when stood on end is thus afforded with extremely little expenditure of time and labor.

The sheet is preferably embossed to form The embossing in the body of the wrapper is arranged to project on one side of the wrapper to form inwardlyprojecting knobs 12 to afford cushions to cushion the article contained in the wrapper. The tongues 9 9" are embossed to form knobs 12, which project at the other side of the wrapper.

The slitted body 1 is provided with a'projecting extension 13 opposite the hook 6 to form a handle, which will be grasped between the thumb and finger of the user in applying the wrapper to the article to be wrapped.

In practice the band 4 is to be of greater extent lengthwise the wrapper than the cylind-rical portion of the lamp-chimney beneath the bulb of the lamp-chimney, so that when the wrapper is locked upon the lamp-chimney, as shown in Fig. II, the lamp-chimney will not extend to the bottom of the band 4. When the wrapper has been placed upon the lamp-chimney and is set upright, the chimney is upheld by the band 4. The embossed bars 3 afford protection against lateral blows, and the closed top formed by the overlapping tongues 9 protects the top of the chimney and holds the wrapper in a substantial form at the upper end of the package, which end will ordinarily be grasped in handling the package.

Both or only one of the tongues 9 9" may be embossed at the pleasure of the manufacturer, or the knobs may be dispensed with without avoiding my invention in other particulars.

The knobs 12 on the tongues 9 9 are arranged so that when the tongues are folded the knobs projecting from one of the tongues will not nest in the cavities under the knobs of the other tongue; but the knobs of the lower of the folded tongues will engage with the upper one of such tongues in the spaces between the embossing on such other tongue, and the knobs projecting up from the other tongue will support the slitted and hooked tongues, so that the folded tongues form a cushion of considerable thickness for the protection of the top of the lamp-chimney, so that in case the package is turned upside down the lamp will be held by a cushioningsupport, and in case packages are placed endwise upon each other, one above another, they will be separated from each other by the cushion.

The bosses on the inside of each bar are arranged in a line extending along the midline of the bar and engage the bulb of the lamp-chimney to hold the edges of the bar free from the lamp-chimney, so that each bar forms a resilient protection for the chimney.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- 'l. Ashipping-wrapper consisting in a sheet having flexible qualities, but also being sufficiently stiff when in cylindrical form to support the weight of the article wrapped when the cylinder is set on end, and provided near one end with a series of slits forming intermediate bars which extend toward the other end of the sheet, but terminate at a considerable distance from said other end of the sheet, said sheet being slitted at its said other extremity by slits which extend a part of the way toward the said series of slits to form terminal tongues; one of said tongues being formed in a hook and another of said tongues being provided with a transverse slit; said sheet being provided between its ends at the edge at which said hooked tongue is located, with a projecting hook-shaped tongue for insertion into a slit at the opposite edge of the wrapper, whereby the portion of the wrapper which is provided with the series of slits may be expanded around abulbous portion of an article to be packed and may be securelylocked at the expanded portion of the package and also formed into a locked cover at one end of said package.

2. Ashipping-wrapper consisting in asheet having flexible qualities, but also being sutfieiently stitf when in cylindrical form to support the weight of the article wrapped when the cylinder is set on end, and provided near one end with a series of slits forming intermediate bars which extend toward the other end of the sheet, but terminate at a considerable distance from said other end of the sheet, said other end of the sheet being provided with three equidistant slits which extend a part of the way toward the said series of slits to form terminal tongues; one of said tongues being formed in a hook and another of said tongues being provided with a transverse slit; said sheet being provided at the edge adjacent the slitted portion of the wrapperbody, with a projecting hook shaped tongue for insertion into a slit at the opposite edge of the wrapper, whereby the portion of the wrapper which is provided with a series of slits may be expanded around a bulbous portion of an article to be packed and may be securely locked at the expanded portion of the package and also formed into a locked cover at one end of said package; said sheet being embossed to provide inwardly-projecting knobs.

3. A shipping-wrapper comprising a sheet having a portion of its body provided with longitudinal slits to form a series of bars throughout said portion of its body and leaving unslitted bands below and above the bars; a laterally-projecting hook provided at one edge of the sheet alongside the slitted portion of the body, said hook being adapted to catch in slits at the other edge of said body, said sheet being slitted by slits extending from" one end toward the same slitted portion of the body to form terminal tongues which may be folded together, one of said tongues being provided with a transverse slit and another of said tongues being formed into a hook to be inserted through the slitted tongue.

4. A shipping-wrapper furnished at one edge with a tongue to insert in a slit, and furnished at the other edge with a projection to form a handle opposite said tongue, and furnished between the handle and the tongue with longitudinal slits.

5. A slitted wrapper of the character set forth having a body formed of longitudinal bars and bands at the ends of said bars; the bars being embossed to provide in wardly-projecting knobs extending along the mid-line of the bars, respectively,to rest against the bulb of a lamp-chimney and to thereby hold 6. A shipping-wrapper comprising a slitted sheet embossed along the mid-lines of its bars, respectively, to form inward projections and provided at one edge of the slitted portion or body with a hook-shaped projection to lock in a slit at the opposite edge.

7. A shipping-wrapper comprising a slitted sheet embossed to form inward projections and provided at one edge with a hook-shaped projection to lock in a slit at the opposite edge and provided at the end with overlapping tongues, one of which is slitted and another provided with a hook to catch in such slit.

8. A slitted shipping-wrapper embossed in its body to form inward projections and furnished with means for fastening the edge of the Wrapper together and provided at one end with embossed tongues which fold upon each other to bring the bosses of the one tongue into the spaces, respectively, between the bosses of the other tongue.
