T ALL WI'IOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. MAINS, of Olena, Henderson county, Illinois, have invented a new and improved.. Land-Roller and Corn-Marker; and I de hereby declare that the following. isa full, clear, and exact description' thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top View of my improved roller and corn-marker.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through theline'n,` z, Hg. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved instrument by means of which the land may be rolled and worked for planting at the same time, and it consists in the combination of the iron rings with the roller, in the combination ofthe levers and rollers with the frame ofthe machine, and in the combination ofthe Scrapers with the frame, roller, and rings, the whole being constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the frame of the machine, to the forward side of which the tongue B is attached in the ordinary mannen C is the roller, the journals of which revolve in bearings -in the side bars ofthe frame'A. The 'roller Cis formed by attaching scantling or thiol; plank to three"`or more circular dis-lts, to the edges of which the said scantling is nailed or otherwise securcl. If desired, the roller may be strengthened and the scantling held more securely in place by iron bands passed around the ends ofthe roller, as shown in red lines in iig. 1. I) are iron rings, each of which is made in two parts, so as to be readily attached te and removed from the roller C, when desired. The rings D should be made of such a form as to impress a conspicuous mark upon the ground. They are placed at such a distance apart as is desired to be between the rows of corn, and may be secured from lateral displacement by having knobs or projections formed upon their inner sides, entering recesses formed in the said roller. are levers, which are pivoted to the sides of the frame A in such positions as to support the weight 0f the roller C and frame A, when required. The levers E may, if desired, be placed upon the projecting ends of the journals of theroller C, or they may bc placed upon pivoting pins. To the lower ends ofthe levers' E are pivoted rollers F, as shown in tig, 1. G are keepers attached 'to the sides of the frame A, and which are ported upon the rollers F, and to support them in a horizontal position when the roller C is being used. H are buttons pivoted to the upper side ofthe fra-mc A, to secure the levers E in a horizontal position while using the roller C. I is a scraper pivoted to the under side of the frame A in such a position that its forward edge may rest against the surface of the roller C, to scrape o' any mud or dirt that may adhere thereto, pthe forward edge of said scraper being notched to conform to the shape of the marking-rings D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-r 'Ihc levers E pivoted to the side of the frame A, and having the' rollers F pivoted to their lower ends, constructed and arranged as described in such a manuel' that the roller C may be raised above or rest upon the surface of tlle'ground, as shown, and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 22d day of March, 1867.
' l A. MAINS.
