Description
@nimh gisten Baten? @Hire IMPROVEMENT IN PRUNING-SHEARS.
dige dgnnle referat tu it these lette'lr ndert inn marking part at tige, same,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
De it known that I, SAMUEL IV. JONES, of Blu'ton, in the county of Wells, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in PruningShears; and I do hereby declare the follow-ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a side elevation of my invention.
In this invention, the shears, fixed on the end of a staff', are operated by two levers connected by rods with each other and with the movable blade of the shears.
In the drawings, A A represent the blades of the shears pivoted at aylone blade, A, having a. shank, B, byA
which it is fixed firmly to the end of the stati` C, the other, A', movable, and having itsend opposite to the cutting-end'connected with the operating-rod. E is a sliding-thimble e, elasping the staEC and moving up and down upon it, having a set-screw, Z, by which it maybe ixed in a/ny required position on the stad'. On one side ot` the thimble F are lugs in which, upon a pin, K, pivots a lever, D. The lower' end of the staff C has a slot, through which passes a hand-lever, H, pivoted on a pin, ,in the sl'ot. Instead off a slot and pin thus described, a simple pin, fixed in the side of the staff, may be used, or anyfother of'the common means for pivoting such :x lever. One ,9nd, z, of the lever H is shaped as a handle; the other has a link or eye, which holds the end of a connecting-rod running from the lever H to thel lever D. m m n'z are holes in the lever D, at derent distances from the staff E, in which the connecting-rods e e' may be hooked. By changing these rods from one of said holes to another, various degrees of power may be given to the cutting-shears A A.
These pruning-shears are operated by the handle, h, which communicates by the connecting-rods c e and lever D with the movable blade A', as above explained. depressing the handle h, the shears are opened; by elevating it again, the shears are closed. Any required degree of' power may be given to the instrument by means of the adjustable lever D. Shears thus constructed, although specially adapted to the pruning of vines, trees, and shrubbery, may be used for any other purpose for which `stout shears are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and rdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The pruning-shears above described, having the fixed bla-de A attached to the staff C, and operating in combination with the movable blade A', the connecting-rods c e', and the levers D and H, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The movable lever D, pivoting in a sliding-thimble, F, on the staff C, and.having the holes m m m, by
which its power may be adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
y SAMUEL W. JONES.
