SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,473, dated February 19, 1901. Application filed September 7, 1900. Serial No. 29,821. (No model.)
To CbZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MYRON YOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the Districtof Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in EX- ercising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved exercising device, and is especially designed for developing the muscles of the fingers, wrist, and arm.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device whereby the muscles in the fingers may be developed either simultaneously with the muscles in the wrist and arm or each independent of the other. The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter referred to, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which the same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved device, illustrating the 'manner in which it is used. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same.
Attached to any suitable support 1 is a baseplate 2, slightly bulged at the center to accommodate the head of a swiveled rod or standard 3, the same being fixed to said baseplate by a clamping-nut l, which also clamps the band 6 of the grip. The rod or standard 3 passes through a perforation 5 in a preferably curved member 6 of a hand-grip 7, said member surroundingthe rod or standard 3, and interposed between the memberfi and a slidable finger-grip 8 is a coiled spring 9, each end of said spring being secured, respectively, to the member 6 and grip 8. To adjust the tension of the spring 9, I provide the grip 8 with a pendent threaded portion 10, engaged by a nut 11, to which the upper end of the spring is directly attached. To the sides of the band 6 are secured springs or the equivalent 12, suitably incased for neatness, the opposite end of said springs being adjustably attached to the base-plate 2.
Having thus described the details of construction of my invention, the operation and ad vantages are substantially as follows: The operatorgrasps the finger-grip 8 with his fingers, at the same time gripping the hand-grip with the palm of the hand and thumb. Now by alternately drawing up the fingers and releasing them a uniform muscular movement is obtained, whereby the muscles of the fingers and forearm or wrist are exercised. Should, however, it be desired to further exercise the muscles of the wrist and arm simultaneously with those of the fingers, the hand is given a twist and at the same time pulled out. Hence the fingers are pulling against the tension of the spring 9 and the hand twisting the springs 12, exertinga tension on said springs, which consequently exercises the wrist and arm with a movement at right angles to that of the fingers. Said movement can either be simultaneously with the fingers or independently thereof, as in the judgment of the one using the device.
I am aware it is not broadly new in devices of this character to provide independent exercising movements for the fingers, wrist, and arm. However, I am not aware of a machine capable of enabling the fingers to be exercised simultaneously with the wrist and arm, or, if desired, one independent of the other. The exercising of Zthe two sets of muscles in this angular manner possesses many advantages.
A distinctive feature of my invention resides in the arrangement of the finger-grip and its rod or standard with relation to the hand-grip. The rod 3 being swiveled permits of a turning movement of the grip 8, while the perforation in said grip is slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the rod. Hence it must follow that any position the fingers might assume when operating the device the grip will accommodate itself accordingly, thereby permitting the hand to occupy a natural position.
The device is extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and durable in character.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a stationary base-plate, a hand-grip, and a tention swiveled finger-grip, substantially as described.
52. In a device for the purpose specified, a suitable base, an oscillating hand-grip, and
'a tension swiveled finger-grip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a device for the purpose specified, a suitable base, a hand-grip and a swiveled finger-grip under tension, said grip comprising a bar loosely guided on a rod said rod being secured to said base, and a spring having one end fixed to the base and adjustably secured to the finger-grip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a device for the purpose specified an oscillating hand-grip, a swiveled tension finger-grip, and means for independently permitting the oscillation of the hand-grip and the finger-grip, substantially as described.
5. In a device for the purpose specified, an oscillating hand-grip, springs for maintaining said grip in a given position, and a tension finger-grip capable of being independently moved at right angles to the oscillation of the hand-grip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. Ina device for the purpose specified, the combination With a fixed base, a standard swiveled to said base, a finger-grip slidably mounted on said standard, and a spring se cured to the base and the finger-grip, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. In a device for the purpose specified, the
combination with a stationary base, a stand- 1 ard swiveled to said base, an oscillating handgrip mounted on said standard springs connecting said hand-grip with the base, a finger-grip slidably mounted on the standard,
and aspring interposed between said base and 4 the finger-grip,substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
8. In a device for the purpose specified, the combination with a stationary base, a standard swiveled to said base, an oscillating hand- 4 grip mounted on said standard, springs connecting said hand-grip with the base, a finger-grip slidably mounted on the standard, and a spring interposed between said base and the finger-grip said spring being adjustably 5 secured to the finger-grip,substantially as and for the purpose specified.
