Description

No. 66,821. PATENTED JULY 16, 1867.
s. ELETGHEE.
WATER WEEEL.
@einen gister @stent @frn SETE FLETCHER, 0F SKVOWHEGAN, MAINE.
l Letters Patent No. 66,821, dated July 16, 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WEEELS.v
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHCM' THESE PRESENTS `SHALL COME:
Beit known that I, SETE FLETCHER, of Skowhegan, inthe county of Somerset, and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbines; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in tbe accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view. Y Figure 2, a. front elevation. Figure 3,4 a transverse section; and Figure 4,'a horizontal section of a turbine and its curo made in accordance with my invention.
4In such drawings, A denotes the turbine, its bottom plate, a, being the fru'stum of a hollow' cone. This frustum is surmounted bya cylinder, b, and Aa seres'of curved loats, c c c e, the said oats being extended from the circumference of `the cylinder to that of the plate a, and being supported by an annulus, d, provided with a raised ange,-L, and arranged on thevoots,'tbe whole being as represented. This wheel, so made, is mounted ou a vertical shaft, B, which runs concentrica'lly through it and its curb. Over lthe wheel or turbine is acurb, C, of peculiar construction. This curb Iis supported by a series of posts, A1D D D, and consists of a plate, e, provided with a circular opening or vent, f, having a ange, g, projecting down fro'rnits circumferenca'and within and close to the flange h, hereinbefore mentioned. A11-inclined scroll-shaped deector,z', terminating inV a dat top, 7c, extends above and overl the opening f in manner as shown in the drawings, such deiector ending in olreceiving-I'uouth, Z. 'The inclination of the said detlector to the plate e gradually diminishes from the outer edge of the'moutlxl to the inner terminus of the deector.
The purpose of Ythe rsaid delectoristo cause the water, downward and outward, so as to act against the buckets ofthe wheelV to the best advantage. The inclination of thebottom plate of the wheel cci-operating with .the deflector aids in deiecting the water against the buckets, so d the inclined deector, the useful eiect of the water on that, by the combined action of the inclined bottom un after being raised within the curb, to .bc'decctcd' the bucket is found to be 'much greater than were the bottom plate or were the curb' provided with vertical sides.a
What, therefore,`I claim as my invention, is- The curb as made with the inclined s'croll-deector, -as specified, with the conical bottom, and `having its buckets arranged'as specified.
in combination with the wheel, as made SETH FLETCHER.
