SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,191, dated February 19, 1901.

T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILHELM K'CBHLER, j eweler and watchmaker, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,'and a resident of Fiirth, Bavaria, in the Empire of Germany, (and whose post-office address is No. 16 Sternstrasse, Fiirth, Bavaria,) have invented a certain new and useful Clock-Winding Mechanism, of which the following is an exact, full, and clear description.
This invention relates to a spring driving mechanism with two driving springs for clocks and watches, according to which by turning a key to the right and left the winding of both spring-barrels is rendered possible.
According to known similar arrangements three or four plates are necessary for mounting or journaling the spindles of the springbarrels, whereas the present construction only requires two plates.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section through the spring-barrels; Fig. 2, a section on the line A B of Fig. 1, as seen on the right. Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, elevations of the attachments at the ends of the spindle.
The spring-barrels are arranged between plates a b. At the center of barrel 0 a spindle or a core 61 is-arranged, which extends through the plate a and, with its cylindrical extension 6, of less diameter, also through the plate b. On the end of the spindle cl, passing through the plate a, is keyed the ratchetwheel f, with which engages a pawl g, pivoted to the plate a. The second spring-barrel h is provided with a hollow core or a hollow arbor 't', which is loosely mounted on the extension 6 of the spindled and passes through the plate I). The motion of the spring-barrel h and its arbor i in only one direction is secured or insured by a ratchet-wheel k, fixed to the latter, a pawl l engaging with such wheel.

The winding of the spring-barrels is effected by two ratchet-wheels m and n, of which the former is securely or firmly fixed to the part 6 of the spindle d in a suitable manner, while the wheel a is secured on that part of the hollow spindle i which extends beyond the plate I). With these ratchet-wheels m and n, which are provided with oppositelydirected teeth, engage two pawls o p, which are pivoted to a disk (1 and operated upon by a spring or springs r. The disk g, with its hub s, is securely fixed to the end of the spindle cl and can be turned in the one or other direction by the handle-piece t. On account of this rotation of the handle-piece in alternate directions either the ratchet mechanism 0 m is actuated, which effects the tension of the spring of the barrel 0, or the ratchet-gear p n is operated, which actuates the hollow spindle'iof the spring-barrel 72 for tensioning the spring of same. The function of the ratchetfand its pawl g is to prevent the reverse rotation of the spindles d e and unwinding of the springs.
Having now particularly described and as certained the nature of the said invention, I declare that what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cloclowinding mechanism, the combination with a solid winding-arbor d carrying the spring-barrel c, the ratchet-wheel f and the ratchet-wheel m, of a hollow spindle 1' carrying the spring-barrel 7t and the ratchetwheels 70 and 12, said spindle being mounted on one end of said solid arbor, substantially as set forth.
