Be it known that I, GEoEc-E BROWNING, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of I'Iinsdale, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Golfers Registers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a portable registering and recording apparatus for use by golfers in keeping a record of the golf game as played.

The object of the present improvement is to provide a simple, convenient, and portable apparatus for the above-mentioned use and in which are combined means for a ready attach ment to a belt or other part of the players attire, a rotatable registering-dial with an operating-train of spur-and-ratchet gear capable of manual actuation by the player to indicate or register successively the number of strokes made, and means for carrying a scorecard upon which to enter the various plays made during the progress of the game by the different players. I attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a golfers register, illustrative of the present invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3, an elevation with the front portion of the apparatus removed to show the interior mechanism; Fig. a, a similar view with a portion of the registering mechanism broken away or removed to illustrate a different portion of the mechanism from that shown in 3; Fig. 5, a longitudinal transverse section of the apparatus; Fig. 6, an end elevation, partly in section.

Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main casing or housing of the apparatus, preferably of the oblong rectangular box form shown in the drawings and provided on its rear with a spring prong or hook 2, by means of which a ready attachment of the device to the belt or other portion of the players apparel is afforded.

3 represents upturned edges at the respective sides of the casing, forming a receivingtrough for the score-card 4:.

5 is an elastic confining sash-plate secured at one end of the main casing l and at its opposite end provided with a downturned lip 6, adapted to hold the score-card from disengagement, the construction being such as to afford an effective holding of the score-card in place during use and yet permit of a ready removal and replacement of such card.

7 is the shaft of the register mechanism, carrying the rotatable and numbered dial or disk 8, a pinion 9, and'a ratchet-wheel 10.

11 is an oscillating plate-lever pivoted on the shaft 7, With its free end extending outside the main easing, so as to be capable of being manually operated by the player.

12 is an actuating dog or pawl pivoted to the plate-lever lland adapted to engage the ratcheowheel 10 to impart a step-by-step rotation to the indicator-dial 8 in the successive manual actuations of the plate-lever ll by the player.

13 is a spring adapted to retract the platelever 11 after it has been actively operated in one direction by the player.

14 is a spring connecting the free end of the pawl 12 and the inner and lower end of the plate-lever 11 and adapted to hold said pawl in operative engagement with the ratchetwheel 10. I

15 is a locking pawl or lever pivoted in the casing with one end engaging the ratchetwheel 10, the other end being provided with a lateral projection 16, that extends through the wall of the casing to afford a means for manually releasing said pawl from its locking engagement with the ratchet-wheel 10.

17 is a spring holding the pawl 15 in locking engagement with the ratchet-wheel 10 to prevent a retrograde movement of the registering mechanism.

18 is a toothed sector engaging the pinion 9 on the register-shaft 7 and provided with an arm 19, extending substantially parallel with the upper portion of the pawl or lever 15, and in like manner provided with a lateral projection 20, that also extends through the Wall of the main casing to aiford a means for manually actuating said sector in the operation of returning the registering mechanism to a zero position, such manual actuation being in addition to that of the spring 21, the tendency of which is to constantly draw said sector, and With it the registering mechanism, toward the Zero position.

The projections 16 and 20 are arranged in immediately adjacent relation, so as to be capable of simultaneous active operation by the thumb and forefinger of the player and by the movement of said projections toward each other, such active operation restoring the registering mechanism to its Zero position.

22 is a visual opening extending through the lower end of the score-card and through the front plate or Wall of the casing to afford a view of the numeral of the dial 8 indicative of the number of strokes, &c., registered.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. Ina golfers register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, a score-card, and means for holding said scorecard in place upon the casing, the casing and score-card being provided with a visual opening in line with the indicatingnumeral of the registering mechanism, substantially as set forth.

2. In a golfers register, the combinationof a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, a score-card, and means for holding said score-card in place upon the casing, the same comprising an elastic sash-plate secured at one end to the casing, the casing and scorecard being provided witha visual openingin line With the indicating-numeral of the reg istering mechanism,substantially as set forth.

3. In a golfcrs register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, a score-card, and means for holding said scorecard in place upon the casing, the same comprising an elastic sasl1plate secured at one end to the casing, and having a doWnturned lip on its free end, substantially as set forth.

In a golfers register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, ascore-card, and means for holding said score'card in place upon the casing, the same comprising upturned edges on the sides of the casing, and an elastic sash-plate secured at one end to the casing and having a downtnrned lip on its free end, substantially as set forth.

5. In a golfers register, the combination of acasing, a registering mechanism contained therein, a score-card, means for holding said score-card in place upon the casing, and an attaching prong or hook upon the rear of the casing to afford means of attachment of the apparatus to the players apparel, substan tially as set forth.

6. In a golfers register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, and comprising a rotatable and numbered dial, a ratchet-Wheel and means for imparting a step-by-step rotation to such dial, a score-card and means for holding said scorecard in place upon said casing, the casing and score-card being provided with a visual opening in line with the numbered disk,.sub stantially as set forth.

7. In a golfers register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contaii'icd therein, and comprising a rotatable and numbered dial, a ratchet-wheel, an operating-lever, an actnating-pawl carried by said lever and a locking-pawl the upper end of which is provided with a lateral projection extending through the Wall of the casing, a scorecard and means forholding said scorecard in place upon the casing, substantially as set forth.

8. In a golfers register, the combination of a casing, a registering mechanism contained therein, and com 'irising a rotatable and numbered dial, a pinion, a sector having an arm provided With a lateral projection extending through the wall of the casing, a ratchet- Wheel, an operatii'ig-lever, an actuating-pawl carried by said lever and a locking-pawl the upper end of which is provided with a lateral projection extending through the wall of the casing, a score-card and means for holding said score-card in place upon the casing, substantially as set forth.
