CAR `AXLE. LUBHICATOR.
(Application led June 13, 1900.)

tirarse attivi trice.
W'ILLIAM N. SHEEHAN, OF SALEM, OHIO.
GAHMAXLE LUBRlCA'l'OIFt.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,059, dated February 12, 1901. Application filed lune 13, 1900. Serial No. 20,130. (No model.)
To (all w/m'nt t may concern:
Be it known that l, VILLIAM N. SHEEHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Axle Lubricators; and l do hereby declare that the following a full, clear2 and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to the figures ot' reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure l is a detached perspective view of the axle-box, showing the lid closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the box, showing a portion ofthe axle in proper relative position. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the lid, showing a part broken away. Fig. et is a view showing the tube leadingl from the bottom of the auxiliary oil-chamber and the material closing said tube.
Similar numerals ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The present invention has relation to caraxle-box lids; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
rlhe object of the present invention is to provide a mea-ns for automatically supplying oil in case the bearing ot' the axle becomes heated from any cause, and the object is carried out as hereinafter more particularly described.
ln the accompanying drawings,l represents an axle-box, which is constructed in the ordi nary manner, reference being had to properly attaching any improved lid thereto.
To the axle-box lA is properly journaled the axle 2, said axle being journaled in the ordinary manner.
The particular formation of the box and the particular manner of journaling the axle have no particular reference to the present invention; but to carry out the object of the present invention it is necessary to provide a box which is to be provided With a bearing for the axle proper.
To the outer end of the box l is hinged the lid 3, which lid is provided upon its inner side with the inclined bottom 4, which inclined bottom is located and arranged substantially as shown, and, as shown, it is arranged so as to provide an oil-chamber, such as 5, which oil-chamber is provided With a filling-aperture 6, said filling-aperture being protected by an ordinary screw-threaded cap 7 or its equivalent. The bottom of the lid proper is provided With the short tube 8, which tube is located and arranged substantially as shown, and, as shown, it is located horizontally when the lid is brought into its normal position.
In use the lid 3 is so formed that it will close the outer end of the box l when it is brought into the position illustrated in said Fig. l, and the chamber formed in the lid is supplied with a quantity of oil and the oil held in the chamber by means of beeswax 9 or other like material capable of being melted at a low temperature of heat.
It will be understood that if the box becomes heated from any cause the heat will melt the beeswax or like material contained in the tube 8, thereby permitting the oil contained in the chamber of the lid to find its way to the axle 2.
It will be understood that the lid proper can be operated in the ordinary manner in lubricating caraxles-that is to say, the lid may be opened and the oil placed in proper position7 after which the lid is closed. It will also be understood that the chamber contained in the lid is to be supplied with oil at all times except when it is released by heat.
The object and purpose of providing an inclined bottom for the oil-chamber 5 and so arranging the tube S that it will be in a horizontal position when the lid is in its normal position are to prevent the weight of the oil contained in the chamber from pressing directly against the fusible plug or filling contained in the tube S.
Having fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The combination of a car-axle box, a lid hinged thereto, and the lid provided With au auxiliary oil-chamber separated by an inolned bottom from the axle-box, a tube leading from the inclined bottom of the auxiliary oil-chamber, and the tube normally closed by material capable of melting at a 10W degree of heat, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in thepresenee of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM N. SI-IEEHAN.
