DEVICE FOR REMOVING CAPS FROM CANS AND THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 667,145, dated January 29, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES W. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented an Improvement in Devices for Removing Caps from Oans and the Like; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device which is designed for the easy removal of screw-caps from the tops of cans or other receptacles to which such caps are applied.
It consists of the parts and the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section through the device. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a modification.
Cans for the containing of oil, syrup, and many similar purposes are formed with filling and discharge openings usually in the shape of nozzles projecting from the top of the can, and these nozzles are formed with screw-threads adapted to receive a correspondingly-screw-threaded cap, which is provided with an interior washer and when screwed down forms a tight joint to prevent leakage. When these caps are in place, it is difficult to remove them; and it is the object of my invention to provide a means for easily removing these caps from the nozzle.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, A is the nozzle, having screw-threads upon its periphery, and 2 is a cap having corresponding screw-threads, so that it can be applied and secured upon the nozzle. In my invention I have shown this cap having the top 3 formed with an opening 4:, and through this opening projects a lug or extension 5 from a disk or plate 6, of which I have here shown it as forming a part. The disk is of such a diameter as to fit snugly within the interior of the cap and to allow the projection or lug to extend up through the slot or opening which has been made in the cap. Upon the top of this lug is formed a notch or slot 7, adapted to receive a screw-driver or like implement by which it can be turned. The shape of the upwardly-projecting lug may be polygonal, oval, rectangular, square, or any suitable form which will cause it to so engage with the cap as to insure the two being turned together.
Within the cap and fitting against the lower part of the disk is the washer or gasket 9, which when the cap has been screwed into place fits tightly upon the upper edge of the n0zzle,and thus prevents any leakage through this part, and as the contact of this washer with the top of this nozzle is interior to the line of its periphery and that of the disk no leakage can take place around its edges or around the disk.
The slot in the top of the lug is made of sufficient width to allow the use of anyirnplement which may be convenient; but it is preferably made large enough so that a coin, like a half-dollar, can be introduced into the slot and serve as a screw-driver to turn the cap and loosen it from the nozzle.
It will be manifest that the lug or attachment may be fixed to the exterior of the cap by riveting or soldering without making any hole through the cap except in case rivets are used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a screw-threaded nozzle of a containing-can, of a correspondingly-threaded cap fitting thereto and having an opening made through the top, adisk fitting the interior of the cap having a lug projecting through the opening, said lug having a groove or notch serving for the application of an implement whereby the cap is turnable.
' 2. The combination with a screw-threaded nozzle of a containing-can, a correspondinglythreaded cap having an oval or polygonal opening through the top, a disk removably fitting the interior of the cap having a lug projecting through and engaging the sides of the opening and forming a point of application for an implement whereby the cap may be turned, and a disk or washer fitting the interior of the cap and covering the disk.
